Controversial encounters between law-enforcement and civilians - the omnibus thread

I knew it!

It would nice if someone without a vested interest in his death gathered that information. Maybe the Sheriffs Department or the State Police could spare a couple of guys.

In some good news, a jury in Texas found a cop guilty of murdering black teenager Jordan Edwards.

The cop said he fired because he feared for his partner’s life, but his partner never fired his own gun, and the partner also said that he did not fear that the car was going to run him over.

Ad Blocker friendly version of the story.

Good. I hope his appeals falter.

…shoplifter hides in person’s house.

Police blow up house to flush out the shoplifter. Boom.

Police only offer $5000 in compensation.

In Polk County, Iowa, which is 88.34% white and only 4.84% black, Officer Kyle Thies has made 282 traffic stops…and every driver has been black.

He’s got an O.K. chance of them working. Probably less than 50%, were I betting on it, but more than the needle in a haystack that most murder appeals are hunting for.

Weird trial, where the jury acquitted on agg. assault with a deadly, yet convicted for murder. Weirder still that he took the stand, which is how I’m guessing the incident of road rage, that he was alleged to have had two weeks prior to the shooting, made it in front of the jury.

Honestly, after having watched his (very blurry and dark) body cam video, I don’t see his actions constituting murder. He articulated at the time that he thought he was defending his partner from a speeding car. He was completely wrong, per his partner’s testimony, (which is another weird aspect of this trial), but being wrong in good faith doesn’t normally mean the mens rea for murder was present.

I do see enough recklessness for a manslaughter conviction though. Which makes the aggravated assault acquittal even more puzzling.

Oh well, bad cop. Off to jail with him, and good riddance.

That’s probably because blacks are 4,525% more likely to be doing stuff that necessitates being pulled over. It’s not the cops fault.

This is mind boggling. In what scenario is it acceptable to use explosives on a third party property to catch a freaking shop lifter?

Fuck the police. This dude barely weighs 100 pound and is getting beaten down with cuffs on.

Video of Vallejo arrest stirs criticism of police use of force?

Denver police arrest a reporter for filming them during the arrest of a black man, tell her to “act like a lady”.

Starving Artist is a cop?

Sentenced to 15 years, with a 10K fine. https://www.dallasnews.com/news/courts/2018/08/29/defense-hopes-show-jury-real-roy-oliver-seeking-mercy-ex-cop-murdered-jordan-edwards

We’ll see if it sticks. FWIW, 15 years is more in the line of sentencing for a felony of the second degree (manslaughter, murder under the immediate influence of sudden passion arising from an adequate cause) rather than a felony of the first degree like non-capital murder. 2nd degree felonies have a sentence range of 2-20 years in prison; First degree felonies have a sentence range of 5-99 years. Capital felonies get you either the death penalty or life with or without parole, depending if you were over 18 or not when you committed the crime. See Title 3, Chapter 12 and Title 5, Chapter 19, of the Texas Penal Code: https://codes.findlaw.com/tx/penal-code/

Telling her to act like a lady was a little unnecessary? How about arresting her when no crime was being committed??

St. Louis’s City Prosecutor has told the Police Chief that she will no longer prosecute cases involving 28 named police officers.

Whoa.

So why can’t the police just withdraw instead of killing someone with mental health problems when she is in her own home?
