Where does it say they support Trump? That would be a non-sequitur even if Bernie were the nominee, and he isn’t — at least not yet, and I hope he never is.

I am firmly anti-Bernie. And yet, I would vote for a clump of hair from Willie Nelson’s shower drain before I would vote for Trump.

Perversely, stuff like this is why I’m anti-Bernie. I know the difference between socialism and Communism, and I think the CPD stance is ridiculous, and I support most of what Bernie stands for, but that doesn’t matter. What matters is that the Dems MUST win the White House and Senate (I’m naively assuming they retain the House). What matters is that this country may never recover from another four years of Trump, and that a Democratic President won’t be able to get anything passed if McConnell retains control of the Senate. Probably won’t even get any judges appointed, including if RBG resigns on inauguration day.

What matters is that as stupid as they are, there are millions of people who think like the CPD, and will not vote for a (perceived) Commie, and may even be energized to get out the vote against him, affecting the Senate and House races. The only remaining candidate who would be worse is Buttigieg, because the same people will never vote for a gay man.

It’s not right, it’s not fair, but we don’t have time to fix that before November. Maybe we can fix it by the next election, if we win this one. If we don’t win this one, we’ll have much bigger problems.

There was a woman at the Iowa caucuses who was for Buttigieg. This was someone who was interested enough to be attending the damn caucus, and who had evidently compared his positions against the other candidates. In other words, more politically aware and motivated than most people in the US. She had just cast her vote for Mayor Pete.

Then someone spilled the beans that he was gay. After recovering from her shock, the woman tried to get her card back. She wasn’t gonna vote for no gay, based on her extensive Biblical knowledge.

The article says you would have to be living under a rock to not know that. No, you wouldn’t. You’d just have to be working for a living, and not have time to follow politics.

The author, like many people here, probably spends much of his day watching or reading about politics. But we are not typical. Most people know nothing about a small-town Indiana mayor, or a senator from Vermont. Most people aren’t that interested yet, and won’t be until at least after the conventions, and more likely until right before the election. That’s when they’ll be inundated by ads that say Pete is gay, or Bernie is a Commie, and that will be a shock to them, and they will either not vote, or vote for Trump.

We can’t let that happen. It’s too bad that millions of people think a monogamous gay man is morally inferior to a serial adulterer and philanderer, but they do. It’s too bad that people don’t know the difference between democratic socialism and Communism, but they don’t. We don’t have time to fix that before November. We have to win. We have to nominate someone who at least requires voters to examine his policies before deciding against him, rather than completely bypassing their brains and inspiring a violent negative gut reaction.

ETA: Not to mention the guy is 80, just had a heart attack, and now won’t release his medical records. He would be a disaster.

A Chicago police officer followed a man off a CTA subway train after he was seen walking between train cars, and then shot the man twice during a struggle inside a busy downtown Red Line station during the Friday afternoon rush hour, according to police.

Two officers were taken off the street pending an investigation of the encounter, part of which was captured on video that Mayor Lori Lightfoot called “extremely disturbing” and which police officials suggested could be part of a criminal probe.

AFAICT, neither of the two officers was ever in danger or even likely to be in danger. The only person in danger seems to have been the guy they (possibly) assaulted and (definitely) shot.

Denver Police detain a whole school because they have baseless suspicions. This is bodycam footage from several of the officers with very little editing. The whole video is 22 minutes long.

Establishment Democrats make that argument every election. It’s tired, blatantly absurd, and isn’t going to convince anyone of anything but ‘The Democrats are probably going to work hard to lose another election’. Dropping it into a thread that’s not about elections would make it even less effective if it wasn’t already a worthless argument.

For a nice change of pace, not a cop, but a District Attorney, and best of all, no one died.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey has been refusing to meet with Black Lives Matters organizers, so they decide to hold a protest outside her house. Her husband pulls a gun on them and tells them “I will shoot you. Get off my porch.” Not the best optics the day before the primary election.

At least in this case I feel it’s more “respect my authoritay” and less racism, seeing as the DA and her husband are both black.

Protesting on the sidewalk at her house was a bad idea, and going up on her porch was foolish and intended to incite a reaction. Show some respect for people, even if you disagree with them. Another example of ugly politics.

I’m pretty sure we noted this incident earlier in the thread: Judge orders feds to turn over file in Park Police shooting.

The files are sought by the family of Bijan Ghaisar, who died in 2017 after he was shot by Park Police officers multiple times at the conclusion of a stop-and-go chase on the George Washington Parkway.

Ghaisar’s family is suing the government and the officers who shot Ghaisar in federal court in Alexandria.

At a hearing Friday, U.S. Magistrate Ivan Davis said the government had no right to withhold the file from the Ghaisar family’s lawyers. He ordered the government to turn over the entire file by next Friday.

Government lawyers said they have been delayed in turning over the file because the material in the file is sensitive and voluminous.

Judge Davis, though, was unsympathetic.

“You’re required to produce, period,” Davis said. “You do not decide unilaterally for yourself” whether material should be turned over.

the description of his death boggles my mind:

The four-minute nighttime video shows a chase beginning on the parkway a few miles (kilometers) south of the nation’s capital, then turning into a residential neighborhood. It shows the car driven by Ghaisar stopping twice during the chase, and officers approaching the car with guns drawn. In both cases, Ghaisar drives off.
At the third and final stop, officers with guns drawn approach the car at the driver-side door. When the car starts to move again, five gunshots are heard. The car starts to drift into a ditch, and two more sets of two gunshots are heard.

The chase began after authorities say Ghaisar left the scene of an accident in which he had been rear-ended.

So he was the victim of an accident and then the cops killed him.

It wasn’t. Of course it wasn’t. But it was also against department policy, so the resource officer was fired almost immediately (he’d also arrested an 8-year-old that week).

A Silver Springs, MD man was shot while sleeping in his home; his girlfriend was wounded. Cops say they were in fear for their lives!

The Montgomery County Police Department said in a news release Friday that Duncan Socrates Lemp “confronted” police and was shot by one of the officers early Thursday. Rene Sandler, an attorney for Lemp’s relatives, said an eyewitness gave a “completely contrary” account of the shooting. She said police could have “absolutely no justification” for shooting Lemp based on what she has heard about the circumstances.

“The facts as I understand them from eyewitnesses are incredibly concerning,” she told The Associated Press.

The warrant that police obtained to search the Potomac home Lemp shared with his parents and 19-year-old brother doesn’t mention any “imminent threat” to law enforcement or the public, Lemp’s relatives said in a statement released Friday by their lawyers. Nobody in the house that morning had a criminal record, the statement adds.

“Any attempt by the police to shift responsibility onto Duncan or his family, who were sleeping when the police fired shots into their home, is not supported by the facts,” the statement says.

The department’s news release on Friday says tactical unit members were serving a “high-risk” search warrant around 4:30 a.m. when one of the unit’s officers fatally shot Lemp. Police detectives recovered three rifles and two handguns from the home. Lemp was prohibited from possessing firearms, police said.

“Detectives were following up on a complaint from the public that Lemp, though prohibited, was in possession of firearms,” the release says without elaborating.

Sandler said the family believes police fired gunshots, not a flashbang or other projectile, from outside the home, including through Lemp’s bedroom window, while he and his girlfriend were sleeping. Nobody in the home heard any warnings or commands before police opened fire, she said.

“There is no warrant or other justification that would ever allow for that unless there is an imminent threat, which there was not,” Sandler said.

The police department’s news release says the “facts and circumstances of the encounter” are still under investigation.

I said this oin the SDMB years ago and everyone got mad at me, but speaking as an outsider, it’s true. Americans are very fear-motivated, especially in regards to being afraid of one another.

I mean, they might not be as afraid as some folks in countries I just have zero familiarity with, but the contrast between them and hose nationalities I do have familiarity with could not be more striking. When crossing the border and being in the USA it is palpable.

Extended security and body-cam video released Tuesday shows Chicago police shooting an unarmed short-order cook at the foot of a subway escalator and then again with his back turned to officers after they tried to stop him for violating a city ordinance by walking from one train car to another.

The Chicago Transit Authority and police body-cam videos for the first time provide a detailed look at how the incident unfolded from the time Ariel Roman used a subway’s gangway doors to when he was shot for the second time after scrambling away from officers up the escalator. Roman, 33, survived but was severely injured.

In the most striking video segment from a CTA camera, Roman is seen running up to the top of the escalator in the busy red line station holding a coat in his right hand. With the pursuing officers about 10 feet behind him, and with his back still turned to them, a female officer shoots him and he immediately slams face first onto the floor. The officer reholsters her gun and appears to handcuff him.
