Controversial encounters between law-enforcement and civilians - the omnibus thread

Just hang those fuckers. Now.

The first thing we have to accept is that the model is fundamentally flawed. It is based on the political paradigm of peerage: prison is for the royals’ political enemies and not good for much else. CJ as it stands is a failure because we are using the wrong tool to address the issue – note how victims of crime rarely get assistance or restitution. It compounds problems rather than mitigating them, and the police stand on the front lines of this fucked up situation, so no wonder they tend toward assholery.

Well I came up with it just now in the sense that yes, I wrote that all without looking at references.

I don’t live in a vacuum, though, and do my reading. Even in the later part of my conservative/libertarian days, I took to the writings of Radley Balko.

But really, most of my thought comes from working as a non-sworn employee in law enforcement for 14 years. During that time, I met more cops than many cops will. I worked with agencies from large metro departments down to teeny burgs with two part-time officers, and everything in between.

When I started with my agency, I wanted to be a cop. I decided I didn’t want to be a cop after working with so many cops, and being immersed in the LE culture.

In the end, I left for a few reasons. Not the least of which was that I was just sick and tired of having to be around that type of environment, and those type of people.

I mostly agree, though it’s probably no feasible in all cases.

For example, the Kansas City Police Department requires their officers to live within the city limits. But, there is a small area that is within the KC limits that is in the Liberty MO (not the KCMO) school district. Guess what neighborhood is full of cops?? Not the ones that you’d like them to live in, I can assure you.

Washington State Patrol apologizes for a leader urging his team “Don’t kill them, but hit them hard”.

Six Ideas for a Cop-Free World

Buffalo cops knock a 75-year-old man down so that he hits his head on the pavement and starts bleeding, and they claim he tripped and fell.

So, the State Patrol rep apologized. Big whoop. Has the officer in question been placed on modified assignment pending disciplinary review and–let’s hope–getting canned?

In a perfect world, your attitude might be appropriate. But the hell-hole that asshole cops have turned the U.S. into is not a perfect world.

U.S. police have done shameful thing after shameful thing. One black, stopped for NOTHING, is told to fetch his driver’s license. When he reaches for it he’s shot dead because he might be reaching for a gun. Drunk cop in Texas shoots a man dead because he answers the drunken knock on his door. On and on and on. Cop in Minneapolis sits on a man’s neck for eight minutes — EIGHT MINUTES! — even though he’s already handcuffed … and you think we need to look at the autopsy report?? :smack: Maybe cops should spend a day sitting on each others’ necks for eight minutes and see how pleasant it feels.

It is now the police’s turn to perform better. If you can’t arrest a black without killing him, FUCKING STOP MAKING ARRESTS. If you can’t pull a black over for a broken taillight without killing him, FUCKING STOP PULLING PEOPLE OVER.

What part of “STOP FUCKING ACTING LIKE BRUTAL THUGS” is hard to understand?

The Minneapolis police should have been marching with BLM and saying “We promise to do better.” Didn’t do that? Then shut up and fuck off!

If all the cops are so fucking cowardly they need to shoot first and ask questions later because they’re so afraid the man they killed might have had a gun, stop supporting America’s totally asinine gun control.

They’ve now walked back the “tripped and fell” bullshit, and two cops have been suspended.

What about the dozen or so “good cops” that walked past the prone man bleeding from his ears without giving a shit about what was happening?

This is, IMHO, the crux of the problem. What happens to ‘normal people’ who lie on government documents or lie in court? The fact that police can and do lie with ZERO reprucussions is a huge issue.

There is a national database of sex offenders, why isn’t there a national database of shitty/ convicted police? Alessan has a great suggestion in licensing cops.

Police are using smoke bombs and sometimes CS (though they claim otherwise on the latter) on crowds, exacerbating the COVID situation. People in the crowds end up having to remove their masks in order to breathe, as the crowd control measures make them more vulnerable to infection.

This is not good.

Those are not “good cops”. Neither are the cops who witness their coworkers breaking the law but keep their mouths shut about it.

The “rare bad apple” is actually a misstatement. The barrel is pretty much all bad with just a few good apples in there.
ETA: I have heard this from a truly good cop I know.

From everything I’ve read on it, it actually is about as real as an abusive husband saying ‘oh, she fell down the stairs’ to explain bruises. There’s not even a consistent definition of what it is, studies asking for a strict definition find that virtually every investigator lists a different set of symptoms and conditions. As far as I can tell, it’s just a convenient cause of death to list when someone ‘mysteriously’ dies in police custody.

Older white man is knocked down by police, unprovoked. His head hits the ground and he bleeds from his skull, unconscious. Dozens of cops stream by him as if he doesn’t exist.

This is America.

I started a GD thread on the weird phenomenon of only people in police custody managing to die from ‘excited delirium’ if anyone wants to discuss this clearly very real medical condition there.

Officer allegedly warns Proud Boys to take cover inside because the tear gas is about to start flying – discreetly, because he does not want to be seen playing favorites.

All 57 Buffalo officers resigned in a show of support for the suspended officers.

This is just shameful.

“All 57 Buffalo officers resigned from their response team as a SHOW OF SUPPORT for the two officers who cracked an elderly man’s skull. Think about that.”

Fuck every one of these pieces of shit.

But they’re still on active duty. So Buffalo has at least 57 cops who think pushing elderly people to the ground and walking away as they bleed is fine.
