Now, I know better than to browse Craigslist, I really do. And occassionally there’s a dog there that I say “hmmm…I wouldn’t mind having that.” But I usually have willpower of iron. I have 6 dogs, one of whom needs a lot of special care since she has congestive heart failure. She alone is costing $150/mo in meds, probably another $100/month trying to keep her eating, cooking for her twice a day, etc.
But look at this beautiful dog! I am on the verge here. Tell me I’m crazy.
If you can afford it, if your other dogs adapt well to new companions, if you have the space, if you have time and energy, go for it. Cuz yeah, he’s gorgeous, he’s healthy, it sounds like he’s friendly and well-trained. Good dog!
Geez, if you’re already taking care of six, what’s one more?
I have 6 cats (2 of them quite old) and a baby on the way, yet I have fallen in love with a cat at the shelter where I volunteer and the only reason he’s not here now is that my husband has put his foot down. So I too am as insane as you are, StGermain. If you talk me out of adopting Spartacus (that’s his name), I’ll talk you out of adopting Ringo.
Rubystreak - I have 4 cats and two horses (well, one TB and a mini) as well.
I have 14 acres and a big old farmhouse, I don’t make a lot, but I have no debt except for a nominal mortgage. My job is as stable as most and I have 6 months of living expenses in savings, not including my retirement accounts.
But 13 animals seems to be approaching hoarding territory. All my animals are spayed and neutered and current on vaccines. One is dying, but relatively stable at this time. My vets know me well. All are well-socialized and well-liked by my neighbors. All but the horses are lying near me right now.
Anyway, it’s not a decision to make lightly. It’s a lifetime commitment.
He is gorgeous! I say… why the hell not? You are an excellent owner, and by the time you get to 6 or 7 dogs… well, it really doesn’t make that big a difference, now does it?
I think the DNA test is WAY off base… Doberman…OK, I can see that. But Cocker Spaniel? Yorkie? PAPILLON? Um… no. Where did the brindle come from?? Doberman/Boxer maybe…
He looks almost like a dobie/rhodesian ridgeback cross to me, although neither breed has a brindle coat. There might be a little boxer or pit bull in there to give the brindle, but I don’t see it. Or maybe boxer/greyhound. That would account for the lean but muscular build and the brindle coat.
Yeah… after I posted, I went back and looked at him again, and I’m not seeing Boxer there after all. But he got the brindle from SOMEwhere… He does look very Ridgebask in profile. The face is a little houndish. It’s always so fun to try and figure these mixes out!
Are there any brindle hound breeds? Off to Google…
He looks like a Ridgeback, and they actually can come in brindle but it’s very unusal. Brindle was an acceptable color when the breed started but only wheaten made it int the standard.
More importantly, if you can financially and emptionally cope with multiple animals ageing and needing a lot of medical expenses paid at once, go for it.
I’ve had friends who were fine with having four or five cats - right up to the point that they all got old and needing a lot of vet work at the same time.
