A few months ago, I cooked my first ever batch of smoked brisket (and some ribs) for my family, and my grandfather thought it was pretty tasty. My grandfather and father used to run a BBQ restaurant (started two or three, sold them) and competed in cookoffs for a few years, winning several, so their approval made me feel pretty good. After cooking this batch, I repaired a stuck damper for better temperature control next time, so I expect the next batch to be even better.
I cooked three briskets and gave two to my friends for loaning a truck (and gas) to move the smoker and for helping load and unload the firewood
This Labor Day weekend, we celebrated my grandfather’s 80th birthday by having all of his descendants and their SOs come in from across a few states for the weekend, and I was stuck with making a dessert along with my sister who lives relatively close by, since I only had an hour drive instead of the flights or long drives that most of them had. My wife isn’t much of a cook (and everyone knows it), so my grandmother suggested I just buy a cake or pie or something and my sister offered to bake one for me and I could just brink chips or something else.
Instead, I made a rum cake from an old recipe I found that made all the other desserts go begging, including a homemade from scratch German chocolate cake and fresh homemade ice cream.
Anyone else feel like bragging about anything good you have cooked lately?
Well I can’t post pictures here–but if you go to Giraffe board you can see my pulled pork in the photo section there in a thread called ‘big green egg win’ We had a big Labor Day party and so I cooked (4) 7 lb pork butts for 16 hours and they came out awesome! I also did 3 microbrews for the party and another friend had 3 more. So lots of good beer and pulled pork sandwiches all around. The pork was just so tender and with a good bbq sauce it was fantastic.
I haven’t tried a brisket yet but that is my next big cook on the big green egg. Congratulations!
