Cooking pork chops

So I’ve got this idea that maybe I can throw a couple pork chops, some potatoes and carrots and maybe a chunked up acorn squash into a crock pot and cook it all that way. It’s just me and the guestling these days so crock pot cooking really appeals to me right now.

My questions are;
Will this work with pork chops

If I wanted to maybe cut up a couple of apples and thow those in also, would that work?
If the apple idea is ok, anybody have any idea what sort of apple would be best?

Of course it will work. It’s food and it’s being cooked. After simmering for several hours, it will probably just fall apart for you. I think apples sound like a winner. Granny Smiths will have a tarter flavor than some other types. I’d avoid red delicious apples, as they are usually a bit mealy. Add some sort of herbs: thyme or rosemary work well with pork, as does sage. After the meat has cooked, you could remove it and the vegetables, then put the remaining liquid and apples, etc. in a blender to make a sauce.

I have done it with pork chops and just poured some barbecue sauce over them toward the end. I wouldn’t cook them too long.

Yeah, yum

I would suggest though browning the chops before you put them in the crock-pot. It adds flavour and stops the food tasting like it’s been boiled to death.

I would come be your next guestling if you wanted to serve that. Sounds good to me.

You know bloody well it will work. Yer just try’n to make us hungry!

I do it with lamb chops, using French Onion Soup for flavouring. Takes between 1-2 hours.

Apples will work. But if you’re cooking them in a crockpot, apple cider would also give the flavoring and would work as a marinade. Maybe throw in a tablespoon of honey and brown mustard.

Thanks for the tips yall, specially bout the herbs, overlooked that part.

I’ve never cooked with apples this way before, but I’ve had this line from a tv show stuck in my head from time to time for decades and it just started giving me ideas,

“…pork chops and applesauce sweetheart…”

Apples are a natural with pork. Less known, but no less delicious is pork with prunes.

This time of year I like to peel, core, and chop a bunch of different apple varieties, load them in a crockpot, and cook them on low all day or overnight. “Instant” applesauce. In the OP’s case I’d grill the chops and serve with applesauce, or do two crockpots; one with chops, herbs, and veggies, and one with apples.

This baffles me somewhat, as what I think of as pork chops are generally fairly lean and can be grilled or fried in minutes. Particularly as if you cook them too long, they’ll end up dry and tough.

In a crockpot, I’d use a fattier cut, such as pork shoulder, that lends itself well to slow cooking.

Are US pork chops different from what I think of in the UK. Can someone send me a link?

I also think of pork chops as too lean for a slow cooker. I find that country ribs cook very well in a slow cooker, but that’s just me.

I fixed the thread title.

With the passage of time, all things are corrected.

Thank you Sir.

What, no parsley?
mmm

Better if you sear them first. Then into the crockpot with creamed corn.

Just want to throw in the fact that for pork chops or pork roasts, a wonderful condiment is Stonewall Kitchen Roasted Apple Grille Sauce. It is to apple sauce as a fine champagne is to tap water.

Another great apple-based sauce is Taste Of Inspirations Sweet Apple Grilling Sauce. The only problem is that a lot of people are going to have a hard time getting it; it’s a store brand so you have to get it at a supermarket that’s part of the Food Lion chain (Food Lion, Giant, Hannafords, or Martins).
