Cool concert in Los Angeles tonight:VH1 honors The Who

The Foo Fighters opened up with “Young Man Blues” and “Bargain”.

The Flaming Lips played “Sparks”, "Christmas", "Pinball Wizard", and “See Me Feel Me”.

Incubus, Tenacious D, and Pearl Jam are in the wings.

Oh yeah, The Who are playing a 40-minute set to close the show.

You can catch it on VH1 next week.

Haven’t they been on a Farewell Tour for the past 20 years or so?

Who cares? They are The Who and can do whatever they want - they’ve earned my respect. I had this on DVR the minute I heard about it - looking forward to seeing it…although frankly bands like U2 and some early punk bands should be at the front of the line to kiss Roger and Pete’s rings, too (and I am sure those bands would be the first to agree - I just wish VH-1 had the pull to make it happen…)

You mistake The Who for the Rolling Stones.

Thanks for this post. I hadn’t heard about this prior. Setting up the TiVO now.

A lot of people think The Who wore out their welcome, well, 20 or 30 years ago. They’ll never get an argument from me. Less competition for tickets!

(They’ll be in LA for two shows at the Nokia Theater in November before heading to Japan)

I was at the show. Not exactly the best seats, but the show was great and the sound was excellent.

Stuff you probably won’t see -

  1. Mila Kunis does one of the band intros, and she was so… shall we say, off?.. that they made her do a second take.

  2. Something went wrong with Pete’s guitar about half-way through You Better You Bet, so they stopped cold, complained for a minute, then started the song over from the beginning.

Also, in one of the taped interviews, Roger’s got a very funny line about the future of the band, but it’s just foul enough that I wonder if they’re gonna bleep it out or simply not show it. If you want to know, he says something like…

As long as he can still play and I can still sing, there’s no reason why we can’t keep doing this into our 90s. It’ll look like shit, but it’ll still sound fucking great.
