Cool/Crazy movies that make you think?

Seven Samuari mae me think.

Way of the Gun just made me feel like crap.

Lynch may not have written the book on weird, but he damn sure gets a “Special contribution by…” credit.

The Man Who Wasn’t There, along with being the most visually stunning movie I’ve ever seen, hands freaking down, and being an amazing story, gives one a lot to think about.

And, fuck yeah, 12 Monkeys.

If you are looking for something more reality-based, anything by Michael Moore (“Bowling for Columbine”, “The Big One”, his television series “The Awful Truth”) is thought-provoking (though he does use some clever editing and framing to bend the truth a bit).

Another great thought-provoking film is “September 11” (known as 11"09’01 in Europe), which is a collection of 11 short films by directors around the world. Though some of the films are on the pretentious side, the best one is Ken Loach’s comparison between 9-11 and Chile’s own 9-11 in 1973, when Allende’s socialist government fell to Pinochet’s CIA-backed coup.

David Lynch’s “Eraserhead” (wow…pretty fucking weird)

“Blue Velvet” (One of Lynch’s best)

“The Reflecting Skin” (This movie pretty much tops my list of all-time bizarro movies.)

“Last Tango In Paris”, which despite the creative use of dairy products, was more cerebral than your average soft core sex movie.

“Time Bandits”. Okay, didn’t make me think. Made me laugh.

“Mom, Dad, don’t touch that! It’s evil!”

“The Usual Suspects”. “I am Kaiser Sosa”

“Jacob’s Ladder”. Saw this one real late at night, so don’t remember much except . . . whoa.

12 Monkeys sounds like a highly liked movie. I think I’ll have to check that one out.

Big Bad Voodoo Lou: Ive seen lock stock, snatch, and reservoir dogs. All extremely good movies. Forgot to mention them in hte beginning :S.

Marlow: Why’d Way of the Gun make you feel like crap? It was an incredible movie, although the ending could be a bit depressing… I suppose.

For Terry Gilliam, I’d recommend “12 Monkeys” and “Time Bandits” before Brazil. A lot of people like Brazil, but it gets real weird and flighty, and goes on too long, IMHO.

“The Usual Suspects” is very good.

Something I’d call “cool/crazy that makes you think”: “Se7en” (seven).

There’s an overlooked sci-fi film called “Equilibrium” that you might say is “The Matrix” meets “Fahrenheit 451” that I liked.

Also, check out “Cube” about a group of people trapped in connected cubes who need to use their collective abilities to get out.

There’s a sci-fi flick called “Pitch Black” that I liked. Pretty standard plot, but all the characters are faced with these life/death choices and saving themselves vs. saving others all through it. It’s got Vin Diesel.

I thought “The Conversation” was boring.

“Spider” is all about a guy going insane, but TOTALLY boring.

Ditto “12 Monkeys”, “The Usual Suspects”, “Memento”

Did anyone mention “Total Recall” yet?

Sliding Doors

The circumstances in this movie really make you think about split second decisions you make in every day life and what would have happened if you had made a different decision. I told all of my friends about this one, they always came back with Two Thumbs Up!

Heh, Total Recall is kind of… a given? Everyones seen that practically.

Se7en looks cool.

Right now, my list is composed of
A Clockwork Orange
12 Monkeys
Lost Highway
Memento
Se7en
Gosford Park
The Conversation
The Usual Suspects
Blade Runner
Dark City
Equilibrium
Thirteenth Floor
Cube
In kind of order… only because some o the later ones were suggested later.

Thx for all your help. Ive got enough movies to plan to watch for months… but more suggestions would be appreciated as well.

I loved Cube, but avoid the sequel, Hypercube. Or, as my boyfriend called it, Hypersuck.

Dead or Alive might be something you’d like. Its worth watching for the first 15 minutes and the last 15 minutes. The ending is guaranteed to be the craziest thing you’ve ever seen.

I would say that old movie Taxi with

damn hamsters anyway the movie taxi with Robert Deniro and definitely American Psycho and you should really read the book American Psycho once you make it to the first killing it get’s increasingly more fucked up just thinking about it makes me want to read it again when I finished the book all I could say was jesus fucking christ

Taxi Driver is the DeNiro movie (which is awesome), but Taxi is an old sitcom about New York cab drivers with Danny DeVito and Tony Danza.

Heh, I remember the first time I watched that movie, it warped my mind with all the twists. Any movie that can make ya go WTF, laugh, and have to keep a scorecard to keep track of all the twists can’t be all that bad.

I just watched 12 monkeys tonight.
Pretty good movie, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Kind of long and boring at parts, but the over story was great and had enough suspenseful twists to not put me asleep.
(Brad Pitt’s part in the movie was incredible).

Rented Dark City as well… watchin that tomorrow night.

You’ve got a great list there. But you are missing something: BRAZIL. Watch it. Third best Sci-Fi movie EVER, after Blade Runner and 2001.
And while we are on the Terry Gilliam subject: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Crazy fits that movie to a t.
