Cool site: From 10 million light years to protons and electrons

My old roomie is a physics major, and she gets a lot of cool links in her email. She was sent this link, which takes you from 10 million light years from the earth, all the way to protons and electrons. (As an added bonus, those of you near Tallahassee, Florida, can see how far 10 million light years is from your city.)

I’m not really a ‘science person’, but this webpage is really cool. I never really thought about how far 10 million light years was until I saw this page. It kind of makes it easier to grasp just how freakin’ far away that is. Cool!

Molecular Expressions: The Powers of 10

Good site. There’s a movie that’s even better, though. Try to find a copy of Powers of Ten by Charles and Ray Eames.

The Powers of Ten movie is available on a CD from Robot Arm’s Eames link. My copy requires an obsolete version of QuickTime to run (that is, it was already an obsolete version when I bought the thing in 1998), so it’s a pain in the butt to operate. I don’t know if they’ve made any updates or not.

Wow, I didn’t know quarks looked like a bowl of Fruity Pebbles. I guess that’s what they mean by “flavor”.
