Two planes deliberately crashed into the World Trade Center this morning, and there was another plane crash at the Pentagon.
The debate? What do we do?
It’s really easy to talk “sense” to Israel when they get bombed. What do we do when it’s happening in our own yard? My vote: U.S. and Israel team up, declare war on, and lay utter waste to any country that openly supports terrorist actions (Palestinian authority, Syria, Libya, Iraq, etc).

Just saw the pictures of the World Trade Centre. And one of the towers collapsing.
But - calm heads, people. The terrorists want a massive overreaction. Don’t give them what they want.
Find who’s responsible and punish them. But don’t punish the innocent along with the guilty.
This is war.
If we find that a government is AT ALL behind this, there will be a war. Libya, Pakistan, Iraq, etc. It will mean there destruction.

I think its time we let Arab countries that are notories for sheltering these terrorists know that we wont tolerate it anymore.
My strategy would simply be to begin making warmonger comments, displaying the US’s intense anger, and essentially tell the governments that they can cooperate or be destroyed.
I’d be bluffing, because millions of innocent people live in the Arab nations, but I would be willing to go up to the very brink of war. I think that the mistake that the terrorists made this time is the severity of the attack, the UN/EU won’t demand the US stand down. They may not help, but they won’t get in the way. My feeling is that Osama Bin Laden (the terrorist behind the orignal World Trade Center bombing) would be turned over before a bomb was dropped.
The trick then would be to not turn him into a martyr. I don’t know if that’s possible, and I’m sure Bush would execute him without qualms. That would be very bad.
Right now, please get off the Internet unless you live in DC or New York. The Internet is being overloaded and those of us who actually live here are trying to find out how to get home.

over 10,000 people work in the WTC, 300 + on one of those airliners. They slaughtered thousands of people at one shot not counting how many thousands on the streets below when the WTC buildings collapsed (they both fell now)
I firmly believe we should show the same consideration for the civillians in the country responsible.
God, this is a terrible terrible event, but surely you’re not saying that two wrongs make a right?
Civillians in whatever country is responsible for this should die because they have died in the US?

They’re not the wrong people. They’re the neighbors, brothers and parents of blatently violent terrorists. Not only do they condone the acts by their silence, they’re probably a lot more sympathetic to these violent causes than we realize.
You just want to hit the planners of this attack? That’s not going to do you a bit of fucking good. Years to find 'em, difficult to extradite, they’ll probably kill again before we ever get them. Plus, and this is important, they’re ready to die.
Want to make 'em sorry for what they did and, equally important, dissuade them from doing it again? Show that country’s populace the same consideration they showed those corpses burning in the WTT and the Pentagon and in the Philadelphia plane right now.
Massive, decisive, overwhelming destruction for the country and it’s idealogues. Anything less and this shit will happen here all over again a few years down the road.

Well, it doesn’t take a crystal ball to see that today’s events are likely to result, within two weeks, in a massive US air strike, probably using conventional weapons, on one or more foreign countries.
I’m sure plenty of Americans will rejoice over the resulting loss of life, but unless there is some sort of intelligence breakthrough (distinctly lacking so far), it is unlikely that said stike will do much more than satisfy a general lust for revenge.

I would not be surprised if we see an invasion of Afghanistan down the road, with, irony on top of irony, Russia and the US going jointly. What we are seeing developing on the TV is a modern-day Pearl Harbour. If there is a willl to destroy terrorists and their sponsors, this is the time to do it.

I have shaking fingers as I type this, and I’m a cold unfeeling type of person as a natural defense mechanism. I’m freaked and pissed. OK City was nothing compared to this. I hate flag waving jingoism, and yet now I have a vampiric desire for blood that scares me more than the images on tv. This could be the end of the world as we know it. Or I could be making fucked up hyperbole based on being in shock.
I get the feeling we’ll see a sizable commando raid in Afghanistan in the near future with the idea of bringing in bin Laden dead or alive, whether he had anything to do with it or not.
Personally, I think this is the result of middle eastern moderates abdicating in favor of the extremists. And the moderates will be the one paying the most, as the extremists can now celebrate their new martyrs.

It is highly unlikely that any nation-state was involved in these bombings, simply because nation-states are much too vulnerable to retaliation. A country can be bombed, invaded, and occupied by US troops. No nation would risk such a thing, no matter how vicious the leadership might be.
So, this is almost certainly the work of a non-state terrorist organization. The hard part is that most of the terrorist network is probably already dead in the suicide bombings. Neat. You clean up loose ends at the same time you carry out the mission.
But, this could possibly spell the end of these non-state terrorist cells. They have routinely been granted aid and comfort from nation-states like Pakistan, Afganistan, Syria, Iran, and Iraq. I would imagine that any evidence of such a help in the future will be met with airstrikes.

It seems to me there is little hope of fighting this. Who are you going to attack? The people that hijacked the planes? They are already dead. The people who coordinated it? Okay, so you kill them, but many more would eagerly do the same thing. DO you kill all of the sympathizers? How? And wouldn’t doing so generated even more hatred of the US, leading to more terrorism?
