Copenhagen in October?

After seeing a friend’s pictures of her trip to Denmark, I’m inspired to take my next vacation there. I figure the soonest I can reasonably take off work will be in October, and flights/hotels are very reasonably priced for that time of year.

However, I’ve read in a few places that Copenhagen really slows down in the Fall and Winter. I figure October is early enough, and the average weather still sounds OK, but I’m curious if anyone here has any experience that might discourage me from going at that time.

I’ll probably be going alone, so my main goals would be to videotape pretty hi-def scenery and architecture by day, and eat fatty food and drink beer at night.

Giving my thread one bump, in case the resident Copenhagians(?) missed it.

Check out the Carlsberg brewery. That was fun.

Expect it to probably be gray and dreary. If you expect vibrant colors and vigorous life, come in the Summer. October will more than likely disappoint on these counts.

If on the other hand, you go in for the damp moody melancholic scene, it might be ideal. IMHO, lots of the castles in Denmark are more ‘atmospheric’ in the ‘off-season’.

According to my guide book, you will be able to see the Autumn Jazz Festival, The Gay and Lesbian Film festival, and the “Night of Culture”. This latter event sees museums, galleries, churches, libraries and theatres opening their doors after dark. It is usually held on the first night of the autumn school holidays.

Culture night is pretty cool, very crowded though but if you want some shots of big crowds with pretty lights everywhere that might be good for you. And isn’t the CPH jazz festival on now? I didn’t realise there was another one.

But the fatty food and beer part will definitely be accommodated at all times of the year  You’ve already missed the street party and holiday season I’m afraid.
