Hi all. maxthevool and I are fulfilling a prophesy made here and visiting Isle Royale in July. We also have a friend’s wedding to attend in Minneapolis, so we’ve rolled the two into one trip.
Most of our days are at least broadly outlined, but we are a bit stumped about what to do with the one day we’ll be driving between the two above locations. We like normal travelly stuff, but I’d love to hear about anything unique and awesome about this region. (What IS this region? I can’t find a good name for it, which makes Googling for this info tricky. Just northwest Wisconsin?)
If there’s neat bird or mammal watching (hoping for moose, obvs, on Isle Royale). Any interesting foodie or farmy things?
Good bakery and winery in Iron River, even has mead.
Amnicon Falls is a lovely state park. If the water is low, you can swim under the falls, which is always awesome.
There’s the Globe store in Superior, which is a sorta old time newspaper/bookstore.
Canal Park in Duluth, lift bridge. You can find the schedule, see if any cool ships will be in port.
Richard Bong museum in Superior is well done.
Small little park in old town Hibbing next to a small creek, nice place to have a picnic lunch.
All I can think of off the top of my head.
You can go down the Wisconsin side, see Spooner, Hayward, etc. cross over at Taylor’s falls, Interstate State Park is worth the stop, although might be packed in July. Keep heading south along the St.Croix, take a look at Stillwater.
A second vote for the Delta Diner. I haven’t been there myself but my folks have many times and they LOVE it, very good food.
Also - if you get around the Spooner/Hayward area of northern Wisconsin, give a shout. You’ll be in my neck of the woods if you’d like to meet for a hello.
Well if you like deer, say 100+ deer, easily, take the road from Ino to Delta at dusk. County road E to H. Eventually you’ll see the Delta diner, turn around and you can see them again. I think the most we’ve counted is 170, the least maybe 60. Never hit any, although they’ve tried on occasion.
It’s all flat hayfields, and there are herds of them all over, reminds me of the Serengeti.
As a bonus, I’ve seen quite a few bear along the wooded area.
Porcupine mountains state park is big, we camped there a couple years back. Can’t remember much wildlife, or trails. We liked it, would go back, just can’t remember specifics.
What is your route? Is the trip going from Copper Harbor down to Wausau, WI then west to Minneapolis? (There’s also a route via Spooner or Duluth too).
I’d recommend the route via Spooner and Hayward. Both are boutique-y little towns. Hayward has Tremblays Sweet Shop which has OMG fudge.
There is a trail that goes from the Cloud Lake lookout and heads East - mostly flat with great view of the lake.
In Copper Harbor visit Ft Wilkins. (Migght was well drive to the end of Hwy 42) Harbor Haus is expensive but good (Lunch is more reasonable). Definitely take Brockway Mt Drive.
From Houghton you can take 203 to Calumet (stop at McLain) and 5 mile point road to be along the shore longer.
