In NYC when four cops shot up Sean Bell’s car, all standing within half a street’s width from the car, 50 of their 100 shots missed the car entirely. One of the missed shots almost killed a LIRR passenger a half mile away at Jamaica station. (Bell was unarmed and completely innocent of any wrongdoing.)
In another NYC incident, two cops shot and killed a bad guy (murderer) in front of the Empire State Building. Justified shooting, except their misses wounded nine (!!) innocent passersby.
We don’t know the exact numbers, but the cop in Ferguson apparently missed more than half his shots. We’re all lucky he didn’t wound or kill someone else.
Cops are all too frequently (just cruise around YouTube a bit) caught violating the law and/or abusing citizens on camera.
These things do not indicate well trained or even over trained officers to me. The emphasis in training apparently needs to be refocused.
Cops need to be trained to do their jobs better. Trained to shoot straight and deal with the public in less confrontational ways. Instead of providing armored weaponry, it might be better if the federal government funded continuing education training for police officers.

But the militarization of police in America is, I believe, beyond dispute. And it worries many others, besides little-old me. You, Sir, are a gentleman. Pay attention, the rest of you. This is how debate and the rules of proper discourse are performed. Throwing tomatos is one thing. Making sauce is another thing entirely.
