Whenever Corin Nemec stars in some new project, I’m always surprised when commenters on io9 (a sci-fi blog) say something to the effect of “Hey it’s Parker Lewis!”. Granted, Parker Lewis is iconic as the TV version of Ferris Bueller. But given it’s a sci-fi site I would think everyone’s immediate reaction would be “Hey! It’s Jonas Quinn from Stargate SG-1!” (Daniel Jackson’s year long replacement).
When you hear the name “Corin Nemec” (or see his picture), what role do you immediately think of?
Also specify if you are a sci-fi fan, and whether this was a factor.
Heck yeah, I’d go with Jonas Quinn. I’m definitely a Scifi guy, and it’s a more recent character. Parker Louis Can’t Lose is something I only hear about in the context of the TV version of Bueller’s Day Off, and no one seems to make any big deal out of the actual actors. In fact, I would have never known it was him. On the other hand, with Jonas Quinn, the actor is the entire point. He replaced a popular character, due to an actor leaving a series (temporarily).
Heck, I was surprised as heck that PLCL lasted more than a season, as little as people talk about it as a show and not as just a trivia point.
Would you believe it’s usually “that’s the kid from I Know My First Name Is Steven”? And probably after that, The Stand. I was vaguely aware he was in Stargate, but not the details.
I’m a sci-fi fan, but I’ve never really gotten into the Stargate shows.
None o’the above. I like all 3 of the works in question, and thought Nemic did fairly well, but I have to think to figure out who played any of them, and if I hear Nemic’s name it’s just a vague ‘I know who he is’ rather thank thinking of any of his roles.
Is he the guy who used to be **Corey **Nemec? 'Cause that name triggers some memories of Tiger Beat magazine from the late '80s, but I can’t for the life of me remember what he was actually doing as a child/teen actor. I was probably flipping past his pages to get to the River Phoenix articles.
Parker Lewis Can’t Lose premiered the same season as the actual TV version of Ferris Bueller. Everyone assumed that FB would succeed and PL wouldn’t, mostly because FB was a direct spin-off and PL was an obvious Fox rip-off.
PL was HILARIOUS and head and shoulders above FB. FB died quickly; PL hung on for a bit. It was actually cancelled, then revived after the sets had been struck, then quickly cancelled again. Those last episodes are interesting to watch because they didn’t even have time to completely rebuild the sets.
If you watch PL you’ll see other actors you’ve seen in other things subsequently – for example, the guy who plays Kubiak was on ER off and on, and the woman who played the principal has been on lots of other things.
It was Corky, not Corey. Oddly, he wasn’t born with the name Corin, either. Seems weird to take a stage name and then also take a nickname for the stage name.
Also, having visited Wiki to confirm my memory about the nickname, I now know that he’s a Scientologist. Yeesh.
