Corporate Confidentiality: When The Boss Talks

and most good jobs will “top you up” to the equivalent of your salary, with the understanding that you are now locked in to return after the year

Well, many companies offer more. That’s just the minimum required by federal law. But yes, it bites.

I would send him an email or text message before another minute passed.

It would read;

"I have yet to even interview for the position I spoke to you about.
I shared it with you, in confidence, sorry I was not clearer.
Can it be true you are announcing it to people and already posting my job that I have yet to vacate? I surely hope I have been misinformed as I was relying on your professionalism and confidence.

Thanks for listening.
Melodyharmonius."

You can’t unring a bell, it’s true. Nothing can change what’s already been done.
You can however start the backpedaling and damage control that this egregious act calls for.

Good luck.

My first thought was also that your boss already has been consulted about your abilities and already knows you’re going to get the position, interview or no. Either way, he could use a reminder about professionalism it seems to me.

I’ve really got to be more careful with my reading. My first thought as I read that line was, “But what if I’m not a bottom?”

I got a chance to talk to my boss yesterday, and he apologized for telling people without giving me a heads up.

Corporate mandate dictates that he had to report it to his boss - and his boss is the one who wanted him to post it immediately, because he claims that it will take 2-3 months to fill my position with the right candidate.

My boss was supposed to have my job posting in to corporate last Friday, he’s been dragging his feet. He offered to do “whatever he can” to help me find a position in Charlotte and has told me that he’s not going to fire me if they find someone else. However, I called him on that, because he and I both know that his boss would if they found a good candidate.

He admitted it was true, but promised to work as hard as he could not to make that happen.

I have a phone interview tomorrow with the internal posting that started all this mess. Keep your fingers crossed that it all works out.

In other words, you’ve been explicitly told that the penalty for even looking for another job is to be fired.

Fuck that - even if you don’t get the other job, and even if they don’t find another candidate for your job, it’s time to start looking. On the QT this time though. Bastids.

I am so sorry to hear about this melodyharmonius. I can’t believe they are posting your position before you have even interviewed for the other job!

If it makes you feel better I am in a strange position at my current job. I don’t fit in here and everyone in the office knows it but they don’t have a reason to fire me and I am holding out for at least 1 full year here before I quit and go somewhere else, so I am a weird place where I am sort of waiting for them to fire me and they are sort of waiting for me to quit. I guess work just sucks sometimes, huh?

so I finally interviewed by phone for the position that started all this mess, only to find out that they have restructured that position to a hard core sales position, instead of the strategic marketing one I applied for.

The woman I interviewed with was very enthusiastic about my skills and asked my permission to “send my resume around to the department heads” because she thinks that some of the other departments could use me. But until I see a job offer, it’s all vaporware.

But now that they have announced that they intend to replace me - I’m on the warpath for a new job.
