Correspondence course with NYI Photography - been theres?

Has anyone completed or heard of the New York Institue of Photography correspondence courses? I’m living in Japan and thinking about doing one, but i need to know if i’ll be able to complete it in one year, if it’s worth while and i won’t be getting ripped off etc etc… Would appreciate comments from anyone who’s done this course. Of course the material i’ve received is very positive, and there are a few quotes from people who’ve been there, done that, and they say it’s grand (for a grand)… Thanks

If you look up that company in Google Groups you will find some discussion. For example: “…all correspondence courses depend on a high non-completion rate to earn their margins (people who actually do the entire course are an expense, though nothing like the relative level of their advertising expenditure; in some cases, each new course member is actually paying for the entire cost of the ad they replied to…) You can work out for yourself what this really means. You can get value from these courses, but it’s up to you. It is in their interests (not just NYI, any commercial correspondence course) to try to let your involvement die off naturally without any refund.”

would you say they might encourage you to lose interest? (correspondence courses in general that is) would a dedicated person be made to lose hope through, for example, a lack of correspondence?

Just want to add that people sell this course on ebay.

Popular Photography Magazine has a great message board, with lots of satisfied (and less than) students of NYIP.

That link only brings you to the search page, however, but search on ‘NYIP’ in ‘All Forums’.

Hope this helps. (BTW, I’m not an NYIP student.)

Thanks, I’ll check it out
