I remember reading somewhere (many years ago) that at the end of WWII there was an engagement between a pair of (British?) Corsairs and a pair of German fighters (FW-190s or ME-109s). I’ve never read or heard anything about such an engagement since. Did such an encounter actually happen?
It’s certainly possible, since the British Fleet Air Arm flew Corsairs off some of their carriers from mid-1943 onwards. This page: http://www.fleetairarmarchive.net/Aircraft/Corsair.htm tells you everything you ever wanted to know about Corsairs in British and Commonwealth service. It’s mentioned that FAA Corsairs were used in one of the bombing raid on the Tirpitz in Norway; it seems likely they would have encountered the Me-109 there, and also possibly the Fw-190.
Thanks, burntsand. That (Norway) definitely sounds like what I remember hearing. I didn’t see anything specific about Corsairs being involved in air battles against German aircraft, but I’ll e-mail the webmaster and ask directly.
