You die in a car accident without life insurance, what expenses does the family pay when they claim your body? Let’s say it was a single car accident, slamming into a utility pole and killing you at the scene.
Tow truck for removing the wreckage?
Cost of the utility pole?
Ambulance?
Local funeral home’s embalming cost? (or does the morgue embalm?)
Car insurance would pay for the first two, and health insurance for the third. I’m assuming you’re asking about a situation where the driver also has neither of those.
Legally, I think all of those costs could be billed to the dead driver’s estate, but probably not directly to other family members.
The morgue probably would not embalm, but might still incur some costs, and it conceivably could insist that the family pay those costs before it released the body. The problem with that is that the morgue then gets stuck with responsibility for burial of the body if the family declines to claim it.
Well, you know, it depends–if you want it done right and hire a professional, it’s gonna set you back some; now, if you just hire some mook from the back of Soldier of For–…What? Oh.
