Lets say that I have no immediate family, no spouse, and no insurance.
If I get in a car accident and fall into a coma for a few days, then die, who picks up the hospital bill? Does the hospital just write this off?

Here’s the obligatory IANAL, and here’s my 2 cents. I would think that the cost would be deducted from the remaining value of your estate after depreciation and other outstanding debts are paid. If the remaining amount is too small, then I guess the balance after that payment is written off.

Nope, MedicAid. The taxpayers float the bill. “We” pay the bill. I was just in the hospital and many of the people there were uninsured and were all fully covered by MedicAid. Anyone who doesn’t have insurance is eligable.
It is no laughing matter. If you worked at McDonald’s and were covered by some low-end medical coverage plan, but still made $5.75 and hour, the insurance company would most likely cover up to two weeks of a hospital stay or $15,000 worth of medical expenses(maybe more, maybe less). After that you are on your own. Your credit will go to hell in a hand basket but nobody cares. It happens all the time. In the more serious cases, you would be better off without insurance in the first place.
