I live on the west coast of the US so you don’t have to remind me how much cheaper your gas is than ours.
My question is simple. Why is diesel fuel right now so much more expensive than regular or even supreme gasoline? Back in the 80’s when GM and others were selling cars with diesel engines I remember the cost of diesel was either cheaper or roughly equivalent to the cost of “regular” gas. I was driving past a gas station today and the prices displayed were:
That’s a significant uplift for diesel. I know it’s not that popular, but why would someone buy a diesel engine if they had to pay so much more for fuel? And how do trucking companies deal with the inflated price? Do diesel cars get better gas mileage than non-diesel cars?
Diesel engines are more fuel efficient that Gasoline engines, but right now the difference in price probably exceeds the increase in fuel mileage. I have a big Diesel truck, and I’m really avoiding driving it because fuel is so expensive. I suspect that Diesel production is limited by refinery capacity, and there just hasn’t been much incentive to increase production lately.
