I like the flavor, protein and nutrition of cottage cheese, but do not like curds! I think they remind me too much of the couple of times when I was young and tried drinking milk that was way past its prime.
And I definitely have a sweet tooth! So, I like to buy a carton of cottage cheese, an envelope of sugar-free Jell-O and finely dice some fruit that goes well with the flavor of Jell-O I’m working with. Dump the cottage cheese, Jell-O powder and chopped fruit (frozen or canned without added sugar will work) into the blender, whirr it up, and for a full day, that’ll be breakfast, an afternoon snack, and a bedtime snack. All very high in protein, fairly low in sugars/carbs, and sweet enough to be satisfying.
I particularly like pineapple with lemon Jell-O or cherry Jell-O, or clementines with lime Jell-O.
I’ve always been a big fan of the savory, I usually add a small amount of a favorite salad dressing…Blue Cheese or Caesar usually… and snack on that with crackers.
And you don’t need to add a lot of salad dressing, a little bit goes a long way.
Small curd fullest fat available. If I’m eating it as a main dish, I like it with black pepper and onion powder.
As a child, I loved to spoon sugar onto a saucer, and plop cottage cheese on top of it. Cottage Cheese with Sugar on the Bottom, I called it. Grosses me out now to think of it.
But then and now, how I most love it is as a side dish, with a good cut of beef, pork, or chicken, and potatoes (any style except french fries or hash browns). Ah, heaven.
Cottage cheese is one of the best foods around. Especially since you can adapt it to fit any diet and it’s rich in protein. So whether you need high fat, low fat, big or little it’s really a good base food or if you like me plain.
My favourite is regular large curd, but I usually eat no fat as it’s less calories.
I don’t put anything in it directly, but I generally eat it with fruit, usually cantalope or blueberries. I like the slight saltiness against the fruit, and the protein boost in the morning.
This looks like a good place to post an FYI - if you’re eating a low-sodium diet, you might want to switch to low-salt cottage cheese - for a traditional health food, cottage cheese has a surprisingly high amount of sodium in it.
I put some in my cereal in the morning to increase the protein in my breakfast, and I often add it to dishes with cheese in them.
Yes, I refrigerate it for a couple of hours (at least) before eating it. The gelatin in the Jell-O does firm it up. If I use canned or frozen fruit, I also make sure the fruit is as dry as possible.
Large curd for me. Often doctored with dill weed. Sometimes doctored with pineapple or with cajun seasoning. I also like to use it instead of salad dressing.
I voted other just because so far I haven’t found a cottage cheese I didn’t like.
As long as it’s doctored up with the appropriate pepper/and-or/seasoning salts/garlic powder/basil etc.
My latest foray into the world of bacon salt did not mesh as well with the cheese as I thought it might, however. Somehow I must remedy this!
That sounds wonderful! Doubly especially as my sweetie is trying VERY hard to lose weight, but has a definite sweet tooth; I will try that this weekend, thank you
