did a search on the boards, and the last thread about c25k was from 2011,
For those who don’t know what I’m talking about:
C25K is an abbreviation of Couch To(2) 5 Kilometres , a program for the beginning runner, from the nice people at coolrunning.com.
I few years ago someone posted a support thread on the dope, and I joined in, I got to week five or six before I had to drop out
This time I’m going all the way!
I found a app on android called zombies, run! Its part audio book and part game…it takes place during a zombie apocalypse, with every run you unlock suplies for the base…..they even got a 5K addon
Here is the site https://www.zombiesrungame.com/ you can get it from the google play store or the apple one.
You don’t need a smart phone you can get a schedule for free at http://www.c25k.com/
They have podcasts to couch you during the running and lots of other cool stuff
I’m with you, willthekittensurvive! Though on my last run (week 2) I just about ran right smack into a herd of javalina in the middle of the road. I’m using that as an excuse to take a break and rethink the whole idea of a treadmill.
I am!! I’ll start week one on Sunday (1/6). I may end up doing week 3 twice – my memory is that was one that everyone on the board I read said was the most difficult – but I will finish.
Thanks willthekittensurvive? for starting this thread at just the right time of year for many of us to get off the couch.
I was with you this time last year. I was 48 pounds overweight, could barely run for more than a minute and am the least athletic person ever. There were a few detours - week 3 was indeed the toughest, I just about got through it and then I hurt myself and it snowed so I couldn’t run for a few weeks and I am pretty slow, but I completed the program and in May I ran 5km for the first time ever. It actually took 35 mins rather than the expected 30 (like I say, sloooow) but I did it.
I can now run 5km reasonably reliably (still consistently takes ~34-36 mins) and I am working my way through the bridge to 10k, currently on week 5 and my longest run so far has been 8 km in 56 mins with two 1 minute walks.
I’m also only 18 pounds overweight (diet has been very important in this, but the running has helped enormously) and planning to get back on the wagon after Christmas to lose those last 18 pounds over the next few months.
I really can’t recommend C25K highly enough. It is tough (especially week 3), there were times I thought I would never get to 5km, but I did and I’ve gone beyond and I now actually enjoy it. Tell yourself it isn’t optional, go even on days when you hate the thought of it (some of my best runs have been on days when I hated the very idea of going), stick with it and you will amaze yourself.
Turning in for a early night, plan is to go running before work. That’s a challenge in it self, I’m supposed to do day 2 week 1 tomorrow , the first day went well but I can still feel my legs hurt…
The hardest part for me now is running in a slow pace, I keep wanting to break out into a sprint.
Good luck all, and remember you don’t have to run faster then the zombies, only faster then the surviver next to you!
The zombierun app has a different c25k schedule then the one I’m used too, here the first week starts with a 10 minute walk followed by 10 sets of 1 minutes walks/ 15 second sprints and a 10 minute free form run at the end(run, jog or walk as you see fit)
On Monday I got to 5 minutes of slow running on the free form run, and today I was up to 7 minutes running…progress!!
I did this (sans zombies) earlier in the year and dropped out due to injury as well. I swapped over to hiking and am enjoying that but find myself missing the running (if you told me that would happen I would have laughed and laughed.)
Forgive my ignorance: in a thread like this do we check in and say we ran today and how it went or (?)
Anyway…I’m in and THANK YOU for starting this thread. I needed to see it and act on it.
This is my second attempt at a C25K as well.
I really would like to be able to run long distances, and we all have to start somewhere.
Not sure what the thread protocol should be, the checking in and the stating of goals seems like a good start:
the main reason I didn’t chicken out of yesterdays run was because I allready posted in this thread that I was going to run before work…so posting seems to help!
Koeeoaddi, I had to google javalina’s ,never heard of them before, they look supercute
I successfully completed C25K more than a year ago and have been regularly running 5K for exercise. When the weather is right 3-4 times a week.
Except that it’s been way too cold to run lately, that and the holidays mean I haven’t run for 3 weeks.
Given that I’m 52 years old I’ll probably have to start over. I really like the C25K Iphone app.
One thing I’d like to mention is that if you’re going by time rather than distance when you complete the program you can run for 30 minutes which is not necessarily 5K. In my case I needed 10 more minutes of running to get to 5K in distance. My time has improved a little since them but I just wanted to point that out.
I started it and quit at least twice before I finished it and I did some of the weeks (I think I did week 4 for three weeks) for a long time before I moved on to the next week but I did manage to finish.
I have tackled the C25K thing a few times, and never made it past week 3. Life always seems to intrude (work, sickness, visitors, etc).
I downloaded the run, zombies app, and as soon as I kick this chest cold I’m in. I’m really hoping to do the “run for your life” thing in September this year.
38, out of shape, and overweight. Not a great way to be.
Just a heads-up that there are two different “Zombies, Run!” apps by the company Six To Start (and at least one imitation game app named similarly).
There is the original “Zombies, Run!” which is more of a “freestyle” running/walking app. They more recently came out with their Ct5K app which is “Zombies, Run! 5K Training.” Both feature the same general storyline, but for fans of the original ZR app, the 5K trainer is not the “second season” story, but instead fills in details.
Perfect timing! I just restarted the C25K today. I’ve tried it before and never finished, and I’ve also gotten up to regular 5K runs on my own. For a variety of reasons, I quit running about a year ago. So, I’m back to day 1, week 1. But I did it, even though it was cold and I’d rather stay in bed.
My next run is in 8 hours and 24 minutes, running before the sun rises is kinda awesome, with the streets almost empty and the city just waking up.
I have issues with getting up in the morning and I’m hoping that running before work can help me tackle this. Give me some more motivation other then work…
I got the zombie app and I’m not sure I get how to use it. In my C25K app originally the voice just told me when to walk and when to run…this one was not clear on what I should be doing, though it may be that the first workout is only telling you the story.
Funny (maybe)
I have a really eclectic bunch of music on there and the app seemed to “know” what music was good for running from zombies…lots of AC/DC and Alice in Chains while skipping over the Sinatra and Ray Charles. Until the last part when (and I don’t think this counts as a spoiler) it tells me to SPRINT…I am expecting heavy metal and got the Beach Boys. I laughed on the treadmill and got a weird look from an old man. In fairness, I figure the app may still have chosen well when they got to the refrain “I wanna go home! This is the worst trip, I’ve ever been on.”
That’s right Blisters, with the zombies run 5k app the first mission is a free form run, the next work out is a 10 minute walk followed by ten 15 second runs/1 min walk and 10 freeform run(walk run crawl as you see fit), the radio operators tell you when to run or walk.
You used it on a treadmill right? Did you use the accelometer function on the app? Did it work
My run this morning was alright, the set I did on Wednesday went better, was still a bit sore from the first two runs ,today I could only run for 3 minutes at the end even though I managed a 5 minute one on Monday and a 7 minute one on Wednesday…
I first started the C25K program last winter, and got knocked off the track in April when I went on vacation. I had been in Week 7 and fell off the wagon. I started it again recently, and am up to Week 4. My goal is to get through it and continue running regularly in addition to lifting weights as part of my fitness regimen. I use the Podrunner Intervals program, which is a music interval program built on the framework of the original C25K.
Well, I didn’t run this morning, because it was freakin’ cold. But, I did run tonight, and I improved my pace. I wish I was a morning person, but I’m just not. In the past, I’ve always had better luck sticking to evening runs than morning runs, even though it’s harder for my schedule.
Next run: hopefully Wednesday, but may get deferred to Thursday due to my work schedule.
