Could Calvin use his Transmogrifier to [edited out Avengers Endgame spoiler]

I think the title speaks for itself.
Endgame Shmendgame…I think Thanos will be back.

Discuss.

In the comics, they just killed him off…only to find out he had a contingency plan to upload his essence into another body. Moviewise? Not gonna happen without a complete reboot of the entire franchise.

The Transmogrifier converts one thing to another, retaining many characteristics of the original thing. This would only allow Calvin to turn something else into a Thanos that would be distinctly different from the original Thanos, probably as some kind of lazy slacker with a jerkish attitude.

What you need here is the Time Machine so Calvin can go back in time and then return with Thanos. In order to prevent catastrophic paradoxes he could bring the Duplicator with him (the Duplicator being a modified Transmogrifier IIRC). This would allow Calvin make a copy of Thanos to bring to the future leaving the original to continue on his original timeline.

There are two problems with this scheme. First, the Time Machine and Transmogrifier/Duplicator are made out of the same cardboard box, and second, Calvin is very easily distracted and he’d probably return as Stupendous Man with his spacecraft filled with duplicated Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs.

Moderator Action

Since this involves an artistic work (actually a couple of them), let’s get Spaceman Spiff to ferry this thread over to Cafe Society (from IMHO).

I feel I should point out that the new and improved Transmogrifier was made out of a squirt gun. Just point and zap!

True, but I don’t believe it can Duplicate as well. Even if used to Transmogrify something into Thanos the gun form of the device has only temporary results. The Thanos would return to whatever it was before the transmogrification (I’m guessing Susie or Dad). Because the gun is operated by mental telepathy it may require a more focused mind to produce permanent transmogrification.

Bit of a spoiler for the title, movie’s only a month old.

I edited out a spoiler for Avengers Endgame in the title. Please do not post spoilers for recent movies in thread titles.

Colibri

No problem. First you put the Duplicator on top of a mirror, so it duplicates itself, then you turn one of them into a Transmogrifier, and then you use the Transmogrifier to turn the extra Duplicator into a Time Machine.

The real problem is that Thanos is too big to fit into the box.

It’s worth a shot, scientific progress requires daring experimentation. But so far the Duplicator has only duplicated objects put inside of it. You might only get a duplicate of the mirror.

That is a major stumbling block.

What happened to thinking outside the box?

With the edited title I’m not sure what OP is even asking.

Wait, I’ve got it, you don’t even need a mirror:

Step 2: Put the second Duplicator in the first one, to make a third Duplicator.
Step 3: Put the first Duplicator in the third one, to make a second Duplicator.
Step 1: Use the Time Machine to move the second Duplicator back to step 2.
Step 5: Put the second Duplicator into the Transmogrifier, to turn it into the Transmogrifier.
Step 4: Use the Time Machine to move the Transmogrifier back to step 5.
Step 6: Put the third Duplicator into the Transmogrifier, to turn it into a Time Machine.
Step 7: Take the Time Machine back to step 1.
Step 8: You now have one each Time Machine, Duplicator, and Transmogrifier. Proceed as you wish.

That is very appropriate for this thread.

I’m assuming it was

bring Thanos back to life

or something like that.

I was preoccupied trying to figure out which Endgame character’s real name is Calvin.

It was:

Could Calvin use his Transmogrifier to bring back Thanos?

I was particularly annoyed because I was just going to see Endgame tonight.:dubious:

Ok, we know the Avengers are going to win, because this is a comic book movie, but we didn’t know that Thanos was going to be disintegrated instead of escaping to fight another day.

I’d heard rumors about there being people who hadn’t seen it yet, but I thought they were just hyperbole.

In Panama, I try to hit that sweet spot several weeks after release when the crowds have largely subsided but it’s still showing on enough screens so I can see the undubbed version with subtitles. (The dubbed version is more popular so it runs longer.) I saw it last night because when I checked the schedules for today almost none of the cines were still running the subtitled version. However, waiting means that I have to try to dodge spoilers. (My cable went out in the middle of episode 5 of Game of Thrones last week, so I had to stay off Facebook until I could catch up on it on HBO GO the next day).

Why bother with the Transmogrifier? Why not just do what they did in Family Guy.

There are also people who still watch movies on home video, rather than go to theaters. It’s cheaper when you rent (digitally or otherwise). That was how everyone I knew always watched movies when I was a kid–sometimes just borrowing from a friend.

Fortunately, I only cared as a bit of a game, to see how long I could avoid spoilers. I wasn’t interested in this particular movie.

(Note: got spoiled elsewhere about this plot point, not here.)
