Could I have seen the space shuttle pass overhead?

I wouldn’t have even noticed, but as we were walking the dog, we saw two kinda goofy-acting people talking excitedly (with drinks in their hands, hence the goofiness?) about how the space station was passing overhead, and that the space shuttle would be passing about a minute behind.

Obviously it was something orbiting, as I’ve seen satellites go across the night sky before. Constant bright light moving pretty fast across the sky, and dimming as it passed below the earth’s shadow. And as they said, something identical, maybe not as bright, following shortly thereafter?

What are the chances that it was the space station, followed by the shuttle? Do they have the same orbit path (not sure if that’s what you call it)?

Check out Heavens Above.

It’ll tell you what is passing over your head, when, where you’ll see it, for how long, how bright, etc.

And not just with the Shuttle and ISS either, if it’s visible, it lists it.

You can get sky charts for your location and time, with all the constellations.

Awesome site.

Yes, it sounds like it. Use St_Ides link and input your location and select the ISS. When it comes up with the details page, use the link in the top right corner that says Prev. That will take you to the last few instances where it passed over your area. Clicking on the date in question will bring up another page with a ground track and sky map to verify the path that you saw.

I include this extra information as I had the same questions just a couple of days ago…

Another thread and even a pic taken by a doper.

I saw both last night, as predicted by heavens-above. And yes, they would have had nearly the same path in the sky, since it was only a few days ago that the shuttle was docked to ISS.

That’s so awesome- I signed up for an account on Heavens Above, checked it out, and yes, that’s the exact time we saw both of the passes. VERY cool!

I love space. I shoulda been an astronomer, if only I was a little better with the numbers…

I got to watch a shuttle pass over my town in the wee hours of the morning, back in 1993 or '94. I was a breakfast cook, and the shuttle happened to be passing over about 10 minutes before I had to start work. So I just went to work a little early and stood outside staring at the sky. It was pretty cool.
