I fucking hate webcomics. Stupid, cryptic, pretentious, dry, hipster webcomics. And it’s because of stuff like this.
I don’t get the joke. I’m obviously an uncool bonehead with no sense of humor.

I don’t get the joke. I’m obviously an uncool bonehead with no sense of humor.
Well that’s quite the sweeping generalization.
But yeah, I don’t know what the joke is. Sometimes webcomics just aren’t funny.
Although that comic looks like it directed just at beer makers.
Or it’s just a shitty comics. Most things are shitty. A few things are really good. Webcomics are no different from anything else in this regard.
The first thing you have to know is that the comic is for beer geeks. That said, you next need to know that Stone Brewing (Hallowed Be Their Name!) make some of the hoppiest beers in existence. Arrogant Bastard will peel your taste buds off. So the comic says…ah, you can figure it out from here.
I thought it was funny enough to print a copy for the refrigerator door.
You know what it reminds me of are those commercials where people are trying to decide whether to have soft or hard shell tacos, and the little girl says, “why can’t we have both?” and they all cheer and lift her over their heads.
But I doubt that’s what’s being referenced. So in other words, I have no idea, nor nothing else to contribute to the thread.
No, I really suspect it is a parody of that commercial. Add that to silenus’ explanation of Stone Brewing Company making mouth-raspingly hoppy beers, and you get that comic.
And yeah, as a microbrew drinker and homebrewer, I got the joke of the comic.
Edit: Plus if you go to the base URL, it’s a brewing blog. So it was intended for a very specific audience, nothing “hipster” about it.
Ok Ok, I stand corrected, this was an in-joke for beer people and I don’t feel the resentment towards it that I did before. Nevertheless, I still generally hate webcomics (this one isn’t really a “webcomic” as I doubt it is serial.) Every XKCD I have had the misfortune of viewing, I found about as funny as a kick in the nuts.
I don’t drink beer, and saw it as a kind of ‘duh’ comic.
I presumed they were being ‘duh’ because they were already drunk on their own product.
If you’re interested, I’m pretty sure I can change your mind about that. All the best comics these days are on the internet.
All the worst comics, too, but that’s the internet for you.
Thus continuing to prove one of the maxims of humor: The fewer people who get a joke, the funnier it will be for those few people.
My jokes must be hilarious then.
Sturgeon’s Law, friends.
Few people know this, but Theodore Sturgeon had a lot of laws. Most of the other ones weren’t very good, though.
You are probably already aware of Oglaf, as it has a devoted following here on the Dope, but if not then you should check it out.
It is usually NSFW:
Yeah, I’d say probably only one out of 10 was any good.
So kicking you in the nuts is hilarious, then?
What’s inteesting in this is your reaction, which I think bears close examination. By you, of course. You are expressing anger and dismissiveness towards what you perceive to be “hip”.
Then you follow that by disparaging yourself as the party with the problem.
I was going to go further, but then I thought I shouldn’t I just wanted to point this out with an entirely friendly and well-meant suggestion that you take a much closer look for yourself.
All of the things I find to be most funny are generally things that nobody else - at least not anyone smart - ever laughs at. I’ve long since learned that my own sense of humor is seriously out of alignment with the majority of other people.
One of my favorite comedies, maybe my number one favorite, is Freddy Got Fingered, which everyone else I know despises. With the exception of my mom, who thought it was hilarious when we watched it together. She and I usually laugh at the same stuff.
I love the British Office. I can’t stand the American one. Almost everyone else I ever talk to feels the exact opposite. I loved Extras, and I seem to be the only person who could take it. Even my girlfriend, who shares my intense love for the British Office and hatred of the American, had trouble with Extras.
I loved Me Myself and Irene. This film was widely panned and seems to be universally despised. I thought the film adaptation of Breakfast of Champions was fantastic. Everyone else seems to loathe it.
I haven’t seen a webcomic yet that I like…most of them revolve seem to around geek humor, which I am totally out of touch with.
You might enjoy this.
You might like Digger, by Ursula Vernon[sup]1[/sup]. Quirky humour, not geeky, no in-jokes. Sadly, it has wrapped up as of March, but there’s several hundred pages so it should keep you busy for a bit.
[sup]1[/sup]Ursula is also responsible for the LOL WUT pear.
