Could the "Goal of the Century" have been an own goal?

I swear, honestly, that I am not trying to detract from Diego Maradona’s most brilliant goal by asking this (his run is what makes the goal amazing anyway), but looking at the video clips, I have to ask, is it possible that Argentina’s second goal in their 1986 game against England was knocked in by the English player tackling Maradona?

I only ask this for a few reasons. Right before the ball goes in, Diego is tackled from behind by an English player. The direction of the tackle corresponds with the direction of the goal (and the way the ball went). Also, I don’t see any leg motion on the part of Diego that would be him kicking the ball.

I ask this because I haven’t been able to find a clear video that has a good angle on the play. All I have seen are YouTube videos (low quality) and an old VHS tape (gets pretty blurry sometimes).

There has never been any suggestion that anybody other than Maradona kicked the ball into the net, and we’ve all seen full-quality replays from several angles, although it’s true that the video available on the web is not very clear. I think there’s at least one still photo of the actual moment he kicks the ball. The best I can find is this. Maradona is about to score with his left foot, and you can see that the English defender has already lunged at the ball and is not now in a position to be able to strike it with either foot.

Thanks, I think you settled this one - the England player’s right foot is actually ahead of the ball, and his left foot is way behind Maradona’s, which is in position to kick it in.
