Could there have been a reference to "Finding Nemo" in "Monters, Inc.?

I know it takes years for Pixar to animate their films, but is it possible there was some slight foreshadowing in Monsters, Inc. relating to Finding Nemo?

Right now you’re asking yourself, “What the hell is he talking about?” Well, here’s your answer. At the end of Monsters, Inc. when Sulley returns Boo to her bedroom, Boo is excitedly showing Sulley all of her toys. The last toy she hands him is a orange and white squeek toy that looks strikingly similar to a clown fish.

I’m just wondering if Pixar had started working on * Finding Nemo* when they were putting together the final edit of Monsters, Inc. and decided to throw that in there at the last minute.

It’s very possible that they at least had characters designed well, well, well in advance. So, I would say yes–however I don’t remember the specific scene and toy, so I don’t know how well they “match.”

Well, why not?

I am told that some of the cars on the street in Nemo are characters in an upcoming Pixar film. They probably have any number of films in various stages of pre-production; if a reference thrown into a current film does not make it to the screen later in its own film, that reference is invisible.

I believe Pixar is known for including references to both past and future films in the current movie. There are many references to “A Bug’s Life” in “Toy Story 2”, and I think I’ve heard others refer to the clownfish in Boo’s room in “Monster’s Inc.” I don’t know if there is a reference to “Monster’s Inc.” in “Toy Story 2” but I wouldn’t be surprised.

Wouldn’t be surprised.

Yes, Nemo appears in *Monster’s Inc *(twice, actually- he is mounted on the wall of the trailer that Randall gets stuck in near the end). Pixar also supposedly included references to both The Incredibles and Cars, two upcoming films, in Finding Nemo.

I’m almost certain it’s mentioned in the DVD commentary. If not there, somewhere else on the disc – I think they have a section showing all the inside jokes and it could be there.

Mike, from Monsters Inc., swims by in scuba gear at the end of Finding Nemo, during the credits. Most people in America, perhaps elsewhere, willl never see this, or the funny sequence with the nervous yellow fish AFTER the credits, because when a movie ends, 99% of the audience jumps up and high-tails it to the exit like it’s a track meet. (Perhaps more so with Finding Nemo - all that water begs a bathroom visit!)

Also, Buzz Lightyear appears in Finding Nemo. Did you catch him?

Buzz was on the floor in the dentists office by the toy chest

That trailer in Monster’s Inc. is the same trailer from Bug’s Life (where Flick found the circus performers).

The Pizza Planet truck has appeared in every Pixar movie made so far. Find them all!

SmackFu is correct. The reference to Finding Nemo is mentioned on the Monsters Inc. special edition commentary. They also point out props in Boo’s room of Jessie the Cowgirl doll, and the ball from Pixar’s short about the jumping desk lamps. I believe Mike hands Boo the cowgirl doll himself.

Also, the Mobile from Boo’s room can be seen hanging from the ceiling in the scene when the Pelican gets in In the Dentists Office.

Funny, I just watched Monsters Inc on video again yesterday and wondered the same thing about the toy Nemo in Boo’s room.
