SPOILERS
Saw this movie today. I knew I would like it, because it’s from Pixar and I’ve enjoyed their other movies: Toy Story, Toy Story 2, and A Bug’s Life come to mind. I also thought that the monster, Randal, was pretty cool.
By the way, did any of you notice the trailer that Randal ended up in was the same one the bug city was next to in A Bug’s Life, complete with “Pizza Planet” truck next to it?
Not only that, but the opening simulation seemed a take off of Star Trek II’s simulation, also, when Frank Oz’s character tells Billy Crystal’s character that he couldn’t fraternize with the victims was Brazil deja vu for me, and the restaurant they ate at was Harryhausen’s, presumably for Ray Harryhausen.
I’m sure there are more, but these are the ones that jumped out at me.
Damn that Boo was cute! Reminds me of my nieces. I think she carried this film too. And when the big guy was lying in the snow, and his fir was waving in the wind, that was amazing for animation.
P.S. the only reason I saw it today was to see the Star Wars trailer. Not as neat as the first one, neat scenes nonetheless.
I haven’t seen it yet, (and I just realized this seeing the trailer for it this morning) but is there any significance to the two main characters (Mike and Sully) having the same names as the two main characters from Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman?
It was great! Once again, I think I may have enjoyed it more than the kids, but the kids were pretty hushed through the whole thing too. The short at the beginning was entertaining too, what instument did they use for the large bird’s voice?
I admit I was too engrossed in the story to look for things…were there any “Binford’s” on any of the equiptment/tools in the movie? (Didin’t Boo also pass Sully-kitty the yellow bouncing ball with a red star on it…the ball from the short as to where Pixar got it’s light logo, along with the Jesse doll?)
I also like the fact they didn’t include any songs in it…didn’t need em so they didn’t use em. Thank you Pixar!
SW trailer…well, haven’t there been a LOT of complaints lately about trailers spoiling the movie? I thought it was kinda nice to see a “old style” trailer that didn’t try to spoil the story. Not sure if I’ll rsuh out to see Ep II, but I wasn’t annoyed by the trailer.
(They played the Harry Potter one with it…I’m still dying to see this as well! But EWWWWWWWW the last trailer was “Return To Never-Land”…ummmm…NO! Quit recycling old movies, Disney! Especially if your gonna skimp on the animation, and from the looks of that trailor, you did. Buy some ink and read a book, you low-life pandering dullards. What’s next from you hacks? Snow White versus Cinderella, the princess smackdown? Pinocchio II, the wood’s in the hood? The Arisocats II, Marie live at Carnagie Hall? Sheeeeeeesh.)
I thought it was good–not as good as Bug’s Life, say, but good. Not as many sight gags as I’d expected, but some good laughs.
The thing that had me turn to my husband and say “AMAZING!!” about 7 times throughout the film was Sully’s fur. Hair and fur are so difficult to do well in 3-D animation, and the way it moved was just incredible. It was the most incredible thing about the movie, hands down.
I also thought they did a super job with Boo–I didn’t like her face (I hate the way the Pixar animators do humans) but she was very childlike. She reminded me a lot of my son in her movements and reactions.
I loved the animated short before the movie. You know, the birds. When those two middle birds and just pecking the bejesus out of the big bird’s toes, like demented woodpeckers? That was so cute.
Actually, if I may be mistaken, that spoof was from The Right Stuff, which has been parodied in many a space movie after.
I too thought Sully’s fur was amazing, especially the laying in the snow part and his fur is moving because of the wind. Pixar sure has come a long way since Toy Story. Or even Tin Toy, the short cartoon back in the 80s (1989, I believe).
i can’t remember anything specific, but i do know i liked it. the animation was just incredible; it’s all those little touches that make the movie, you know?
i especially liked randall, just bacause of the way he moved. the ‘abominable snowman’ was cute too.
anyway, not to let my inner “pragmatic evil bastard” shine through too much, but why didn’t they just send out guys in hazard suits to kidnap little kids and put them into machines like that one at the end? it would definetly be more efficient, and i don’t see why the monsters would care about human children, as they were believed to be so toxic as to engender destroying huge amounts of city just to try to kill one kid.
They ran out of time - the last shots for the film were completed only days from the release, so the fun extras were not completed. Maybe they’ll make them for the DVD. Or maybe not.
Kinda pricey, but good. I sometimes go there when my company’s paying. Also the Baltic.
Haven’t seen the movie yet, but my granddaughter’s hinting like crazy. Give’s me a good excuse to go.
Peace,
