Could you legally make the back end of your car look like a front end?

In the USA.

Assume that the “rear headlights” look as much like actual headlights as they can while still being fully functional rear lights and nothing more. Thus, in the daytime, somebody seeing you driving away in their rear-view mirror would think you are facing them.

As long as you’ve got a license plate stuck on there, what prevents you from making this modification? Are there blanket laws which prohibit creating confusing situations like this with your car, or would it require modifications which are instead themselves forbidden?

If there were such a rule, I think the New Beetle would be illegal.

Find a copy of the book Weird Cars by John A Gunnell it’s got lots of pictures of them. Sadly, a Google search turned up no images.

Hahaha…I guess you’re not old enough to remember the episode of C.H.i.P.s. where the guy welded two front ends of a car together to make one car with two front ends. Of course while he was transporting it to the custom car show a pokey older couple went to pass a slow-moving RV and came face-to-face with a car bearing down on them from the oncoming lane!!! (or so they thought.) Well catastrophe ensued, of course (for about 20 minutes or so, when in real life it would’ve taken about 30 seconds) and the end result was VERY, VERY BAD.

Um…I don’t remember if it was legal or not, but the idea is at LEAST 30 years old. So in a nutshell: I’m old enough to remember every episode of C.H.i.P.s. and not remember any actual traffic laws. Ok, ok…I do remember it’s illegal for a 13-year-old to drive a car. I think. Maybe. ::Scratches head::

Wow. Maybe that’s where the car I remember came from. When I was in Santa Barbara years back someone had a Mercury xr7 made from two front ends. We’d see it around from time to time. Had a vanity plate: XR14.

Pretty cool.

Typically, the brake lights will need to be red, the turn signals either red or amber, and the backing-up lights white, for the vehicle to be street legal. Otherwise, equipment violation citations will be issued.
