Here’s a scenario. I’m 12 hours from the needle eating my last meal and I stab myself in the gut with the fork (or something sharp if they don’t give you forks). Wouldn’t they take me to the hospital to let me recover? How about if someone facing execution had an MI or stroke the day before the execution (maybe they sneak in an overdose of digitalis or something) wouldn’t they have to delay the execution or would they kill them “wounded”.
You’d be on suicide watch, and not given any sharp objects in order to stop you doing that.
That said, there have been a few cases of prisoners trying to off themselves. I heard of one (don’t remember his name) who was caught trying to cut his wrist. They bandaged up his arm, then took him away and stuck a needle in it.
