Good grief, if this thread is merely about what a tool Ann Coulter is, it’ll be rather devoid of sharp disagreements. She’s a tool. Period, end, unless we’re giving extra points for creative adjectives. I’d be happy if she were never paid for another word she writes.
But I would not – and I assume every single reader here agrees with me – wish her imprisoned for conduct which does not constitute a crime.
Well, I never contended that Bennett wasn’t irresponsible; it was his hypocriscy that was at issue. And your views on the movie version of RENT were … well, let’s not raise that spectre again, shall we? (Tracie Thoms rocks)
But after I begged you to use your power only for good… you went and… and…
I’m sorry. I won’t give you the satisfaction of seeing me cry.
So the outrage is that a person with connections–in this case Ann Coulter–used her connections to escape criminal charges that ordinary schlubs would have gone to prison for?
Except, how many ordinary schlubs do you know that faced criminal charges for putting the wrong address on their voter registration?
The premise is wrong. Ann Coulter didn’t escape charges due to her connections, rather she only faced charges due to her infamy. If you or I had been found to have put an incorrect address on a voter registration form they’d have simply told us to change it to correct address.
True. But when you make yourself into a public figure, you let yourself in for all aspects of your life being subject to public scrutiny (the laws governing defamation and invasion-of-privacy suits acknowledge this fact), and you had damned well better make sure your life can bear that scrutiny.
And that applies with even greater force in this case. Now, I don’t know, off hand, if Ann Coulter has ever written any columns about the importance of suppressing “voter fraud,” but she has unambiguously allied herself with the Pubs and the Bush Admin, who are definitely committed to that fraudulent idea. This story just shows how silly the whole thing is, and shows up her/their hypocrisy. It puts the whole thing in its proper perspective. And the abuse of powerful connections to make the charge go away just drives home the point. Why should we accommodate Coulter and her allies by also allowing the story to go away?
It’s unclear to me, if this is the case, where you have established an abuse of power by a public official.
The FBI agent’s involvement was to verify her story that she was the target of a stalker. It seems to me that if Jane Nobody were in a similar position – that is, she’d been the target of a stalker, had reported the crime to the FBI, had an agent that was familiar with the details of the case – and then needed to point to that case as evidence she wasn’t simply making up the stalker story to excuse her incorrect address on a voting card, Jane would be able to expect the FBI agent to call local law enforcement and verify her story.
Certainly I’d be furious if I were in that situation and the FBI refused to confirm my previous dealings with them. I’d expect that as a citizen, I could count on the FBI doing for me just what was done here for Coulter.
Perhaps you could define precisely what evidence you see for “abuse of power” here.
Oh, dear. How much lowering will be required before you can be included?
Happily, you have options! You could open a Pit thread to specify and illustrate your accusations. I am close on to a birthday, and watching you make an utter ass of yourself in public would be a droll and appropriate gift. Somewhat muted by the fact that I was unaware of your existence until just recently.
Or, alternatively, you could lick the brown grease from my Nixon. Please advise earliest, so that I can make arrangements for a thorough disinfective procedure afterwards.
At the risk of alienating someone evidently on my side of the fence, I nonetheless feel compelled to point out that, at least from my vantage point, I can’t think of a single instance I’d call hypocrisy from elucidator. He is generally very consistent with the application of his views.
For the most part I feel he’s utterly wrong, mind you. But he consistently applies his views to himself as well as to others – he’s not a hypocrite.
The point being, there is no way that anyone you dislike politically can live a life above reproach, because if they have done nothing wrong, you will simply lie about them and then insist it must be true.
You do it right here -
In other words, she is a hypocrite for saying something that even you don’t think she ever said.
Because there is absolutely no evidence of any abuse of any connections. That is something that you simply made up off the top of your head.
You are lying, and blaming it on Coulter. There is no story. You are manufacturing and repeating slanders.
