Countdown to war with Venezuela

Yes. Opposing this sort of thing doesn’t require any high moral standards; it just requires a sense of self preservation and not being convinced you’re untouchable. Trump and Putin act the way they do IMHO in no small part because they are convinced that nobody else will ever act towards them like they are acting towards others.

The Senate on Thursday voted 52-47 to block President Donald Trump from further military action in Venezuela. …

The measure, known as a War Powers Resolution, only needed a simple majority to pass in the Republican-controlled Senate and would require Trump to seek the approval of Congress before using the U.S. military again in Venezuela. …

The vote in the Senate was procedural, but it indicates that the measure has the votes to pass when it comes to a final vote in the Senate. It would then go to the House, where Republicans have a razor-thin majority.

Good. At least put all those Republicans against this ON RECORD as being war-mongers.

Not that any will, or should, be surprised by this,

Remember when this was our reason for invading and overthrowing their government?

“Venezuela unilaterally seized and sold American oil, American assets and American platforms, costing us billions and billions of dollars,” Mr. Trump said. “This constituted one of the largest thefts of American property in the history of our country.”

well it turns out,

Jan 10 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at blocking courts or creditors from impounding revenue tied to the sale of Venezuelan oil held in U.S. Treasury accounts, the White House said on Saturday.
The emergency order said the revenue, held in foreign government deposit funds, should be used in Venezuela to help create “peace, prosperity and stability.” The order was signed on Friday, less than a week after U.S. forces captured Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro in Caracas.

ConocoPhillips is the largest non-sovereign credit holder in Venezuela, its CEO Ryan Lance told U.S. President Donald Trump during a White House meeting on Friday, adding that the U.S. government has an opportunity to restore what has been lost.
Trump said ConocoPhillips will get a lot of its money back, but the U.S. would start with a clean slate. “We’re not going to look at what people lost in the past because that was their fault,” Trump said before asking Lance how much ConocoPhillips lost in Venezuela. Lance said his company was owed $12 billion. “Well, good write-off,” Trump remarked.

“Good write-off” ah, that mentality, consistent thru the years.

Let the Florida Cubans look at that, and realize that once the communists fall they are NOT getting compensated for Abuelo’s lands and businesses…

Abuelo isn’t America. Whether ConocoPhillips is seems to change as needed.
