President Donald Trump, said on Sunday that he would not have wanted a second strike on the boat and said Hegseth denied giving such an order.
OK, so Trump says on Sunday that Hegseth had nothing to do with it.
Let’s move to Monday:
But White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said on Monday that Hegseth had authorized Admiral Frank Bradley to conduct the strikes.
“Secretary Hegseth authorized Admiral Bradley to conduct these kinetic strikes. Admiral Bradley worked well within his authority and the law directing the engagement to ensure the boat was destroyed and the threat to the United States of America was eliminated,” Leavitt said.
18.3.2.1 Clearly Illegal Orders to Commit Law of War Violations. The requirement to refuse to comply with orders to commit law of war violations applies to orders to perform conduct that is clearly illegal or orders that the subordinate knows, in fact, are illegal. For example, orders to fire upon the shipwrecked would be clearly illegal.
Multiple sources reporting that Russia is evacuating citizens from Venezuela.
Not sure how accurate of a predictor this might be in the larger context.
“To argue with a man who has renounced the use and authority of reason, and whose philosophy consists in holding humanity in contempt, is like administering medicine to the dead, or endeavoring to convert an atheist by scripture.”
Isn’t the whole reason to invade Venezuela is to get back those oil fields? Once they’re secure, we’ll be there forever, providing security for the fields, and for however it is they get the oil to the tankers. They’ll be sniped at constantly. I imagine trump will get his cut via crypto.
I think their best case scenario is that once they defeat the current government militarily (may be with just airstrikes like in Libya) a new, more US-aligned government will take its place without the need for a continuous occupation.
I would say that is not so far fetched, at least for a while, how long would such a government last, and what would the U.S. do to prop it up is anybody’s guess.-
Not just that; the oil isn’t even that good. There’s also the fact that Venezuela is officially socialist, which makes America hate it for ideological reasons (in practice it’s a standard crony-capitalist kleptocratic dictatorship, but both we and the socialist defenders of Venezuela ignore that). And as well Venezuela is openly disrespectful of the US and makes all sorts of accusations against us (some of which are even false).
I wouldn’t expect Trump to care that it’s officially socialist, but the fact that it fails to grovel before the mighty US properly? And is full of brown subhumans? That he’ll care about. He’ll want to see them crushed with maximum brutality and atrocity.
Iraq is not in a region that was virtually occupied by the U.S. (via military governments) for most of the 70s and 80s.
The bet is that there are enough people that accept the facto U.S. dominance to avoid having to sustain a regime militarily.
That said, I agree that it’s iffy, but since when the risk of having their military interventions go disastrously wrong has deterred Republicans? not to speak the current bunch of Republicans who are incapable of separating how they wish thing will go from how they may actually go.
This is key, really. Regardless of what is likely to happen as the result of such a war, they won’t even be paying attention to that. They’ll be paying attention to what they want the result to be. Regardless of how little they resemble one another.
I think that and Trump’s sick, fucked-up fever dream of being Emperor of the Americas. He sees this as the first step toward that.
Of course, the asshole’s term will end before he gets anywhere close to that, even if he can live to see the end of the term. He’s the decrepit hippo wanting to eat an elephant and trying to nip at its tail.
