Counterculture Anthems

Rock and roll gave us some great music. Some made you want to get up and dance. But I want to hear about the stuff that made you want to raise your fist into the air and storm…something.

Buffalo Springfield’s “For What it’s Worth” is just an example of what I’m talking about. What are your favorites?

Volunteers - Jefferson Airplane

Phil Ochs.

Or maybe the Draft Dodger Rag
Or lots of others. He is, sadly, unremembered.

Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young - Ohio

Country Joe and the Fish- Feel Like I’m Fixing to Die Rag.

Almost any Mothers of Invention song. Just by yelling Zappa lyrics we were fightin’ da man.

Oh, and the Fugs, too. Especially “Kill For Peace” or “Boobs A Lot”, or “River of Shit”*.

*“Who dealt this mess? Yeah, that’s an ol’ cardplayer’s term, but like many things, it can be turned around and applied to frontal politics…” OHMIGOD, WHY has that been stuck in my brain for over fifty years?!?

Found it! Check out the album title, too…

I’m old and cynical.

The joy of the counterculture and the bane of Chris Tucker. (If you know, you know.)

I love this thread. Brings back memories.

Another aspect of the counterculture:

Gotta include Bob Dylan.

And John Lennon.

For all you long-haired, freaky people.

Not much classic punk already posted, so here are a few:

The Clash

The Sex Pistols:

The Dead Kennedys:

And as a bonus, the classic German anti-establishment anthem by Ton Steine Scherben, “Macht kaputt was euch kaputt macht” (Destroy what’s destroying you)

I Hate the Bloody Queen
