Country music star Morgan Wallen was caught on video using the offensive slur on Sunday night. His label immediately suspended him and stations across the country have pulled his music off the air.
Really, I don’t know how anybody can think it is all right to use that word in any context. I’m white, and my parents taught me early on that word is just not acceptable to use. It is an ugly and offensive word and displays the ignorance of the person using it, and I would not associate with anyone who routinely and casually uses it. I feel Wallen deserves the negative effect on his reputation and his wallet. I do hope it is a learning experience for him, but at 27, he should be old enough to know better.
I’m not interested in pursuing what happened 50 years ago, and I suspect most of country music isn’t either.
I am pleased to see that the N-word is no longer acceptable in the greater community around that genre.
I doubt this will destroy his career forever, but this is not his first act of misbehavior and it’s going to take more than an “I’m sorry” to fix this. I expect in a few years he’ll be back, but taking a hit in his finances and career is what will teach him that this is absolutely not acceptable and will serve as an example to others.
This is the guy who was supposed to be the musical guest on SNL in the autumn but was filmed violating social distancing guidelines and lost the slot. (They had him as the musical guest on a later episode.)
Well we all know what he means, but by just saying the cryptic phrase he gets both plausible deniability and the last word. Edited to add: as a tactic, it stinks.
So you really think White men with mullets and White men without mullets are treated differently and live by two different sets of rules? Seriously?
OK, I’ll admit the mullet guys get laughed at more often, it’s true, but that’s not much of a difference. And other than that the two groups are judged by exactly the same set of rules.
Why are you insulting White men (or at least the ones wearing mullets)?
