I guess in other countries, dealing with advances from superiors is just one of the hassles you have to live with. I read that in Russia, ads for secretaries will sometimes include the phrase “No hangups”. This basically means the applicant should not have any hangups about being approached for sex. [Disclaimer: I read this long ago in a post in a newsgroup.] Without employee protections, I’m assuming that underlings just learn to deal with it and either go along with the advances or reject them and accept the career fallout.
What does that have to do with the post of mine which you quoted? At least, unless it’s an example of treating people as professionals while on the job. Of course on many jobs you need to schedule and coordinate time off as a team; but doing so shouldn’t involve sexual behavior on the job.
It used to be that way in the USA, also, at least for women. Some people behaved a lot better than that; but if they didn’t, your choices were to put up with it or quit. And quitting didn’t mean you could necessarily get a job where they behaved any better.
I was mostly lucky; though I did work at a place in the '70’s at which the field boss and one of the field workers got caught screwing in his office on company time. He got his pay docked a bit, or something like that. She got laid off (no pay at all) for several months. I have no idea how consensual it was; at the time everyone appeared to assume she was willing, but in retrospect maybe she was just putting up with it for lack of feeling that she had any better choices.
Come to think of it – I had one of the male workers look in at me through cracks in the outhouse. I yelled at him and he ran off. It didn’t occur to anybody to do anything else about it; and the other women just said ‘oh yeah he’s like that.’ And the company owned several houses they would rent cheaply to workers – the other women warned me not to accept a room in a house some of the men were living in. But it was taken for granted that nothing would happen to them for whatever behavior brought on that warning.
The current situation in the USA, while not perfect, is a considerable improvement. If some in this thread are defending the old situation – I recommend you stop doing that.
I didn’t say that this is the better way. As far as I can tell this is the way it goes very often. Sadly enough.
Coworker relationships are very different in different countries. Russia has been mentioned by Filmore. The fact that this exists does by no means mean that this is desirable. It is just reality.

I should have specified sexual harassment isn’t a criminal act. i.e. Nobody’s getting arrested and prosecuted for it. i.e. It’s not a crime. You’re right, it’s unlawful.
If he was a little older I’d almost expect some Epstein connection to emerge. Not because this guy is especially egregious. But becasue he’s especially inept / unlucky.
I had never heard of her, but I typed in “how much does sop–” and it autocompleted “hie rain make” as the first option, presumably spurred on by this news.
She made $43 million the first year, and is at more than $80 million now. I had no idea this was so lucrative (or if she’s at the top of the OF pyramid), but I can see how a bunch of dipshits like this guy could make it happen.
She kinda had to say that. She’s just a poor working girl, paying off college loans(to become a Lawyer, one wonders why she doesn’t do that for a living) and a mother she supports.
Yeah, I believe all the “if, ands, and buts” in her tale, but not much else.
Either way, this CEO guy is royally screwed.
(Being sarcastic about the Rain person, I know absolutely nothing about her except what the article described)
What a horribly written article. I hope it’s AI generated because otherwise, jeeze, what idiot wrote this. It confuses the names of the wife and girlfriend: “What began as a seemingly innocent kiss-cam moment between Andy Byron and Kerrigan” except Kerrigan is the wife, and later states that the wife (calling her by her married name Byron) has had no comment and is laying low though supposedly she released the only fans stuff. The whole article is a confusing mess. And this exchange has to be reversed:
Not important to this conversation, and nothing against hajario for posting it, but the state of journalism is so depressing.
