Coupons/mobile phones ad in the corner

I keep getting some ad thing in the bottom right-hand corner of my screen when on this message board. It says “Coupons” and “mobile phones”. There’s an X to click to make it go away, but as far as I understand, it’s not supposed to be there at all.

Reported.

It just happened to me again.

Odd that it’s just you and no one else is seeing this. I’m perplexed.

I haven’t seen it in the last few hours, but if it happens again, I’ll take a screenshot.

EmilyG, can you take a screen shot and post the relevant portion? Someone (other than me) might recognize it as a virus/spyware/adware/etc.

EDIT: Hey! Screenshot! Good idea!

It just happened again. I took a screenshot this time.

That looks like the Browse to Save malware. It’s not related to SDMB ads.
There are many removal guides, this one seemed like the most thorough and user-friendly. It does involved downloading a couple of legitimate utilities (malware bytes & a couple of others) but these utilities will do the work for you and keep you from making fatal (for your computer, not you) mistakes that might ensue if you were to attempt a manual uninstall.

Hope this helps, let us know how it goes.

Not long ago I got spammed with an ad for James Bond clothing, it was spy wear spyware.

A spy? Where?

It is easier to help pinpoint the problem if you share information about your operating system and your web browser. Some operating systems are targeted for spy/malware than others, just as some browsers are more vulnerable than others. And with increasing use of mobile technology, it’s becoming important to know the platform (laptop/desktop, tablet, smartphone, etc.) you are using, too.

Laptop, Windows, Firefox.

Get your computer checked out with (all free):
[ul]
[li]Malwarebytes[/li][li]Microsoft Security Essentials[/li][li]SpywareBlaster[/li][li]SpyBot - Search and Destroy[/li][/ul]
Using all of the above should assist in checking/cleaning your system. Bear in mind the perceived infection may require additional work, but at least you will be on the right path.

Once you are infection-free (because I do think your system is infected), install the following Firefox addons:
[ul]
[li]AdBlock Plus 2.2.3[/li][li]DoNotTrackMe 2.2.6.110[/li][li]HTTPS-Everywhere 3.1.3[/li][/ul]
Some folks use a Flash blocker. I’ve never seen the need. YMMV.

At least once a week perform a manual intervention with the software. Make sure the add-ons are configured for maximum effect. You can always dial them back if need be. In the case of AdBlockPlus, use the Easy List filter (minimum). Add the Facebook Privacy List filter if you use FB.

Oh, and never use Internet Explorer. If you run into a site that seems to require IE, install theIE View 1.5.2 addon and view the site in FF instead.

I would add NoScript to that list. With that, you certainly don’t need a Flashblocker and it blocks a whole lot of other stuff.

Sorry you’ve had this problem, EmilyG.

And hey, big thanks to all the Dopers who helped solve this and get her on the road to better. You are the best!

Thanks all!
