When you have court costs from a misdemeanor, and you get en extension because you cannot pay it, what happens if you have not paid it off by the date?
IANAL, but I know the first question a lawyer would ask. With legal questions, it’s “jurisdiction, jurisdiction, jurisdiction.” In other words, which court and where?
In Ohio courts, you may ask the court for an extension (but in our court, that adds another $15 to your court costs), which will routinely be granted. If when all is said and done you fail to pay and the court doesn’t waive costs or grant you community work service instead, you may be found in contempt of court and jailed. I have never heard of that actually happening, though.
Isn’t it typical to have a bench warrant issued when a fine is not paid by the due date?
Yes. I assumed from the OP, perhaps wrongly, that the person remained in touch with the court.
I am going to ask them about this today.
