Court Reporting School

Are there any court reporters here?
My daughter has expressed an interest in going to school for court reporting. She lives in Greenville, SC. A quick Google search will show a lot of entries for court reporting schools.

Like most schools of a technical nature (or any other kind for that matter) ; I’m guessing some are just diploma mills, and some have a good reputation.

So, I’m looking for specific answers and general opinions.

Is there any governing or certifying body that is reputable; and not just a generic certifying institute?
Are both stenographers and voice writers in demand? Where is each type of person generally employed?
For those of you that have gone to a court reporting type of school; what do you like about it? What would you do differently?
Is this a career that is usually done as an independent contractor, or as an employee? While I’m sure the answer is “Both,” I’m interested to know if it’s heavily swayed one way or the other.
Is certification enough? Or is this something that is better suited to an Associates Degree or something?

Any other information you’d like to weigh in on, I’d appreciate hearing. Thanks.

NCRA (the National Court Reporters Association) has a school certification program. Contacting them is always a good first start. They can also provide you with contact information for your state’s association (every state has at least one), and most reporters will be happy to talk to people about education and opportunities.
