Courtney Love killed Kurt Cobain?

Doubtful. Read the thing, and you’ll see it is is very clearly in her “voice”.

She’s not automatically an idiot because you hate her. If she’s lifting from anyone, it’s Steve Albini

I’m not going to bother with cites. I may be exaggerating, but I saw it enough that it sticks in my mind.

Even if that were true, and there’s no reason to think it is, she’d still in that case be amazing at giving speeches.

I forgot to mention it earlier, but she was nominated for a Golden Globe and won several film festival acting awards for her work in The People vs. Larry Flynt. I doubt her acting was dubbed in by another actress, or if she was digitally generated and motion captured by Andy Sirkus.

There is no doubt that she was done some breathtakingly stupid things in her life. But in the post-Cobain years, she seems to have straightened up her act, performed well-respected work and appears to have done a reasonably good job of raising their child. Give her a break.

Cobain’s daughter has been raised by his mother and sister a fair amount of the time since his death, and exclusively for the last several years. So to say Courtney Love’s been a model parent is probably a stretch.

I’m not generally one who believes the woo woo conspiracy theories, but the suicide letter he wrote was very suspicious to me. He had said during his last tour that he was considering leaving the music business, or at least breaking away from Nirvana and starting a band with Michael Stipe. The suicide note, with the exception of the “PS” ending (which was obviously written later and possibly by someone else) sounds exactly like the sort of letter that he would have written to announce that he was doing exactly that.

And then there’s the line towards the end, where he writes about his daughter “who reminds” him how he used to be, but the letters WHO RE are darkened? He wasn’t calling his 1 year old daughter a whore, surely, but it’s a pretty weird coincidence that he chose only those 5 letters to double over and write several times.

Then there’s the business about how much heroin was in his system. So much that he may have already been unconscious before the trigger was pulled.

Yea, I can see why there’s a conspiracy theory there. It may very well have been a suicide, but there’s some awfully strange coincidences there.

Who said “model parent”? I said she hasn’t fucked her life up. There is a lot of room between that and “model parent”.

Actually, you said that she’s done a “reasonably good job of raising their child”. Which probably rates somewhere in between “fucked her life up” and “model parent”.

To my knowledge, they have been estranged for several years at least, which doesn’t speak too highly of their relationship, but what do I know? I’m sure it’s rough raising a child in the wake of a disaster like that, and the daughter seems to have come through it okay.

It doesn’t look like he doubled over them that many times. He (or whoever you think wrote it) probably just had to press down hard.

What do you think it means, anyway? If someone else did it, isn’t that the kind of weird suspicious thing they’d be trying to avoid?

I think we can grade rock star parentage on a curve. Not seeing video of her daughter shooting smack into her eyeballs on national TV rates as a solid “5 out of 10” in my book.

That, and web sites claiming that her mom killed her dad can’t help.

Again, I have no horse in this race. I don’t like the music of either Nirvana or Hole. But I’ll give credit where credit is due. She can write, she can act and her daughter has yet to appear on Cops (to the best of my knowledge).

The People Vs. Larry Flynt was made 15 years ago, and the speech linked above is 11 years old. If her career had continued in the same fashion then Love might be well-regarded today, but I’m unaware of anything particularly noteworthy that she’s accomplished in the past decade. Judging from her IMDb entry she hasn’t done any serious acting since 2002. She had a trainwreck of an appearance on Letterman back in 2004 or 2005, I believe she’s had a couple of not-very-successful albums, and has had assorted financial and legal troubles. She lost custody of her daughter for several years, and IIRC her daughter later chose to live with her grandmother rather than Love.

While I haven’t followed her career closely, it is not my impression that Love has ever managed to straighten up her act for more than a year or two at a time.

How does any of that suggest he was murdered?

I guess the implication is that someone was standing over him making him write this “retirement letter” which was then doctored into a suicide note. And he added the WHORE in there as a clue.

Honestly, I have no idea why he put the WHORE in there, and maybe (probably) it was just accidental. It’s just odd.

He didn’t write whore. The line, which is cut off in the reproduction of the note, is:

Now, you can read that as a “hidden clue” if you’re inclined to believe that Kurt wrote the note with a gun to his head or something. To me, it looks like the normal variation of his poor handwriting. And the transcriptions I’ve seen all say what I’ve quoted above, not “whore”.

That copy is hard to read. It needs to be at least twice that size for me to have a chance to make out some of the squintier bits. Plus, the edges are truncated, including the “who re” part. All in all, doesn’t make very easy to say much about. I suppose the lines in there about not feeling anything about the performances and how it is unfair to the audience and such could be taken as lines about quitting the business, but also does fit with motivation for suicide. He’s a miserable lout who doesn’t get anything from performing and feels guilty about that, and can’t stand the thought of his daughter growing up to be as miserable as he is.

It doesn’t stand out that much. His handwriting is crap, varying in size, placement, spacing, etc. That just looks like pen pressed a bit more that much of the rest. Frankly, it just seems coincidental.

Look, it does seem Courtney has wasted her talent and fucked her life over pretty good. But there’s a far cry from her being a drug-addled skank and her murdering Cobain or having him killed. I’m just asking if there’s anything to actually bridge that gap, or if it’s mostly jealousy, finger-pointing, and conspiracy mongering.

Courtney in a moment agreeing with Cobain to a mutual suicide, then thinking better of it and talking him out of it strikes me as what kind of a mess both were. But it doesn’t really support the notion that Cobain wouldn’t have done it if she hadn’t momentarily agreed a year beforehand. Clearly he was thinking about it pretty seriously to propose it to her in the first place. That kind of depression and misery doesn’t get better just because the “soulmate” or whatever doesn’t want to join you.
