Cowboys for Trump founder and Otero (NM) County Commissioner, Couy Griffin, has been removed from office by a judge’s ruling.
The judge ruled that Griffin engaged in insurrection and he is barred from office for life in accordance with section three of the 14th amendment.
No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.
Here’s a Tweet with an image of the order.
Griffin is the first person removed from office in this manner since 1869.
Who’s next? Doug Mastriano, GOP candidate for governor of Pennsylvania, did a lot of the same things Griffin did on January 6.
I’m sick of the pussyfooting around about what this highly coordinated effort meant. It was an insurrection, it was a focused effort to overturn a lawful election. More people should be punished for attempting to do it.
Some New Mexico residents filed a civil suit seeking this precise result.
Kleinfeld testified Tuesday on the final day of testimony in the civil trial against Griffin. The case, brought by three northern New Mexico residents, contends that Griffin, a Republican who founded the group Cowboys for Trump, violated a Civil War-era clause in the 14th Amendment that prohibits officeholders sworn to uphold the Constitution from engaging in an “insurrection” against the U.S. government. The suit seeks to remove Griffin from holding elected office.
