Cover songs that should be shoveds so far up the artists ass...

The Sheryl Crow and Madonna cover versions already mentioned.

There’s been a TV commercial for some wanna-be pop star who’s singing songs and one of them is a cover of “I Think I Love You.” Why? I ask as I fall on my knees. Why?

Put me in with the contrarians who like Dolly’s covers. I just went out and bought the new album, and have listened to it once through. Admittedly, it’s not up to the standard of “The Grass is Blue” or “Little Sparrow,” and Dolly tends to do that whispering thing too often, but her cover of “Stairway” is, I think, excellent. Considering Jimmy Page’s infatuation with acoustic instruments (cf. Zep III), this is what would have happened if he’d been steeped in more of a bluegrass than a folk tradition. And, actually, it’s the first time I’ve listened to that song all the way through in several years.

She could have left the tremelo guitar off of Bread’s “If.” Aww, hell, that song sucks so bad no matter who does it that David Gates’ Tulsa origins are the only thing keeping Texas from falling into the Rio Grande.

I think Dolly’s take on Stairway would be a lot of fun. Bluegrass is heavenly in small, concentrated doses, and Dolly can do no wrong. The Grass Is Blue is one of my favorite records.

Thanks for the heads up, El Elvis Rojo.

Juliette Lewis singing PJ Harvey’s “Hardly Wait” in Strange Days.

Some idiot remade “In Your Eyes”–the greatest love song ever, and no one could possibly do it better than Peter Gabriel. It’s just hard to believe anyone could be arrogant enough to think they could do it better.

We really need the barfing smiley!

While on the topic of Stairway covers, has anyone else heard Tiny Tim’s cover version?

You haven’t? Here, or here you go. No, really. No need to thank me.

[sub]Actually it’s so weird, I like it.[/sub]

I remember some hardcore rap group did a cover of Rapper’s Delight and totally ruined it.

I also hate Marilyn Manson’s version of Tainted Love, though I never cared much for the original either.

Pat Benatar’s cover of “Wuthering Heights” by Kate Bush made me want to rip the album off the turntable and snap it in half.

I found samples of the entire CD. Some funny stuff on there!

Quoth kaylasdad99:

I’m not familiar with that one, but his body should be exhumed and desecrated for what he did to “Mrs. Robinson”.

Don’t forget his artless rendition of Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This). Wait a sec, is he even famous anymore?

Anyone and everyone silly enough to try to sing “Stardust” after Nat King Cole had already done it.

Oh, I cannot even express how much I hated this cover! He didn’t even do anything different with it! At that point, why bother? I don’t understand why it was such a big hit. It was on the radio all the frickin time, and I just kept wanting to ask the DJ, why not just play the Peter Gabriel version?

Grrr.

[url:“http://www.geocities.com/The_Las/laguardian.html”]The original songwriter was so strung out on heroin at the time he can barely remember himself.

The only other cites I might provide you with are other people like me saying things like “of course everyone knows that song was about heroin…” Which you can take as you like, I guess. And I guess you could say that the song can really mean whatever you think it means, whether that be a girl or a drug. I’m personally pretty convinced that the original performer wrote it about heroin.

Let’s try that link again, shall we?

…help me get a car that I love.

“Wouldn’t you like to chug a chugger…?”

Could I ever find in you again
Things that made me love you so much then
Could we ever bring 'em back once they have gone
Oh, Caroline no

ARRRRRRGGGGGHHHH!!!

Cool. Thanks.

I absolutely loathe the “Lady Marmalade” cover on the Moulin Rouge soundtrack performed by the four tramps of the week!!! If I was Patti Labelle, I’d start pulling out their hair extensions!! Why can’t anyone ever leave well enough alone?
