Actually, that was just a friend of mine from college. He wore a hidden microphone during a party and went around trying to get people to quote lines from that song. Then he spliced them all in the correct order and mixed in a rhythm track from his Casio keyboard.
Nope. This one’s a Cheap Trick original. Rick Nielson (of Cheap Trick) wrote it. Perhaps the version you heard was the studio version, as opposed to the more popular, faster/ louder/infinately more rockin’ live version. IMHO, the live version makes the original seem pretty silly.
As to my favorite covers…

I don’t think so. I’ve got a classic rock compilation CD which includes the live Cheap Trick version of that song (“Hearts Of Gold,” Foundation Records catalogue CDP-96647). The liner notes list Cheap Trick guitarist Rick Nielsen as writer of the song. So unless someone else cut it before the writer’s own band, which is unlikely, it would appear that the Cheap Trick studio recording was the original. There is no question that the Letters to Cleo song is definitely the same song, and I must agree they do a great version of it.
ELO’s cover of “Roll Over Beethoven” (originally by Chuck Berry, I think. I believe The Beatles’ version was also a cover)
Gary Hoey’s cover of “Hocus Pocus” (originally by Focus)
Jeff Healy’s cover of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” (orig. The Beatles)
Malarky, I noticed that you have a lot of my sayings in your sig! Here’s a few more in case you were looking - whatever… butters your bagel, toasts your buns, toots your flute, ices your cake … (yeah, my friends think I’m crazy)

Summer Breeze -type O negative
there’s others, but I don’t know the names… I usually end up going “Hey! I liked that song! Wow, a good cover!” and then resume bobbing the head and surfing…
I like the Incubus/Big Pun thing, though I don’t know the name. My brother just sent me a bootleg of Type O covering Light My Fire… I still can’t decide if I like it… I’ll get back to you…
