thanks… now I know what to request on the local radio station…
BTW, is that on any of their albums?
If I’d known they were that cool, I would have seen them when I was at Ozzfest… ah well…

Its on a compilation cd called “Loud Rocks”. Its got other bands like Static-X, Wu-Tang Clan, and alot more good stuff.
Two covers I like:
10,000 Maniacs covered “Peace Train” by Cat Stevens
and (may God forgive me…)
I LOVE Edie Brickell’s cover of “A Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall,” by Bob Dylan.
One cover I can’t stand:
Pearl Jam’s cover of “Last Kiss”
…And two that tick me off because they’re much more famous than an older version that I like more:
“There She Goes Again,” originally by the La’s, covered (pretty well) by Sixpence None the Richer
“Feelin’ Alright” I like Traffic’s version, Joe Cocker’s cover is (IMHO) overplayed
That bongo player -was- amazing.
You need to see/hear it to truly appreciate it.
mrs robinson by the lemonheads (although I love the orig as much)
one as performed by REM (made me like U2 back in the day)
the spy who loved me by radiohead
i am sure i have forgotten many.

That’s awesome! Thankx shimmery!
DOA’s version of Taking Care of Business (Grand Funk Railroad). I don’t think anyone’s mentioned it yet.
I remember years ago seeing the Flaming Lips when they were completely unknown ("…and they’re famous now?"), opening for a local band at a small club. They played four originals and then played Tommy. The entire rock opera. All the way through. It took hours. I still think it took pawn shop balls for an unknown act to do this.
Silly, silly people. How could you POSSIBLY forget “Proud Mary” by Tina Turner! On the other hand there are a couple of remakes that I absolutely HATED! Limp Bizkit turned a really happy song “Faith” into a 3.5 minute angry piece of crap. The song “Blue Monday” was great already, but those idiots from the band Orgy had to go and mess with it! As for “Turn the Page” by Metallica, originally sung by Bob Seger…tsk tsk tsk. Why’d they have to go and mess with perfection?
Hmmmm… xanadu, you could just say that you dislike rock in general.
You could say that, but you would be very, very wrong. As you can see, all of the original artists that I mentioned are rock artists, and I obviously like them, 'cause I defended them and all. But I just don’t like crappy knock-offs of great songs. Bob Seger and New Order are much better than Limp Bizkit and Orgy. Metallica’s pretty cool, too. I’m just not a fan of that one particular song. I don’t think that much can be said about George Michael, though…
Right now, I’m listening to a very nice cover of the Carpenters’ “Close to You” by BNL. It’s got a smooth jazz feel to it.
Wow, I’m an idiot…I completely forgot to mention “Physical” by NIN, origianlly by Adam Ant…well…I vote for “Physical” by NIN, originally by Adam Ant!!!
Michael Hedges did some interesting covers over the years, with “All Along the Watchtower” probably being the best known. “Come Together”, “Love Bazaar” (Shiela E), “She Drives Me Crazy” (Fine Young Cannibals), “Tomorrow Never Knows” and a pretty cool version of “Like a Rolling Stone.” There are more, but unfortunately, I never got to hear them.
Whoops, how could I forget Steve Tibbetts’ cover of “Black Mountain Side” by Jimmy Page? Truly cool.
**Malarky?–**What blows your snot?
“Whip it” by the DelRubio triplets. Original by DEVO.
“Faster Pussycat” by The Cramps … Unsure on who did the original song, it was the theme to the ‘65 Russ Meyer movie Faster Pussycat Kill Kill. The Cramps also did a cover of Elvis’ “Jailhouse Rock” that I’m partial to.
Bauhaus’ rendition of “Ziggy Stardust” is outstanding. I was thrilled that they played it during the encore of their Dever show in 1998.
“Whiskey in the Jar” is an old Irish drinking/folk song, and the old lyrics say “whiskey in the jar-o” to make it fit the rhythm (pretty common thing to do in Celtic folk music)and to make it rhyme with the nonsense lyric “Whack for the daddy-o” (a phrase that appears with alarming frequency in old drinking songs…)
It ain’t Hetfield’s fault.
Jimi Hendrix - Like a Rollin’ Stone. IIRC, the version I have is from Monterey, and it is incredible.
Beastie Boys - Benny and the Jets. Just like everyone else, they don’t know the words. That doesn’t stop them from singing it.
GnR - Knockin on Heaven’s Door. Perfection
Eric Clapton - I shot the sherrif
GnR - Mama Kin. Just for the introduction on the live cut.
Presidents of the USA - Video Killed the radio star. I’m pretty sure it was the presidents that covered this. It was great.
Chantal Kraviazuk - Leavin’ On a Jet Plane. Brings a tear to my eye. Even more emotional than the Denver version, if that’s possible.
And, while we’re on the subject of sad covers, Ugly kid joe’s Cat’s in the Cradle just couldn’t hold a candle to the Chapin version.
I like Van Halens cover of You Really Got Me, by the Kinks
A few years ago I saw a home video made by the 1st Recon Sqdn. (USAF) of their final few flights in the F-4 Phantom fighter (the RF-4C variant) before the squadron deactivated. Mostly shot from the back seats of the fighters. They had put a soundtrack to it of various rock songs and “Ride of the Valkyries.”
Anyway, just as “Valkyries” is fading out, you notice that the camera plane and the plane they’re filming are getting lower and faster above the Scottish countryside. Van Halen’s cover of “You Really Got Me” starts, and on the first drum beat a low hill passes between the planes. (at first you think the other plane might’ve crashed) Gradually the hill levels out and you see that trees are passing BETWEEN the planes at well over 500 mph as they follow the terrain mere yards above the ground! Gave me goosebumps. Now whenever I hear that version of the song I see Phantoms low and fast over Scotland.
Just thought I’d share.
