Covers you would have liked to hear from artists who have left us

I’ve been listening to a lot of songs from The Carpenters lately, and it occurred to me that their production style, and particularly Karen’s voice, would have been well-suited to cover “A Whole New World” from Aladdin.

What other songs would you have liked to hear covered from artists who have died or groups that have disbanded?

There’s a famous (but long) story about David Bowie, the punchline of which is “If it’s good enough for Shirley Bassey, then it’s good enough for you.” So I wanted to hear him cover “Goldfinger.”

When Joe Cocker passed, I remember being disappointed that now he’d never be able to do another half dozen or so Beatles covers to fill out an album.

I didn’t really care which ones, I just wanted him to do it, since the ones he has done are all good.

I reckon Prince could’ve done a killer “Gimmee Shelter”

I’d like to hear what Stevie Ray Vaughan would have done with Link Wray’s “Rumble”.

Absolutely anything by Michael Hedges.

While we’re on the subject, “Take Me to the Pilot” always sounded like a song Elton John wrote for Joe Cocker but ended up recording himself. To the the best of my knowledge, I don’t think Cocker ever did a cover. Too bad.

Also, I don’t think Warren Zevon covered any Elvis Costello songs.

I hope Richard Thompson will cover it before he’s gone. Could also be a treat.

I’ve said it before (and apparently Lennon said it too) but I really think “Oh Darling” should’ve been sung by John.

I wish I could hear Buddy Holly singing “Old Town Road.”

“Oh Darling” really should’ve been sung by Otis Redding but he unfortunately died before the song was recorded.

I’d have really liked to hear Johnny Cash cover pretty much anything by Peter Hammill/VDGG!

Maybe In Slow Time or Faint Heart and the Sermon perhaps.

I’m just listening to my favorite Bowie album, “Hunky Dory”, and had the thought that “Life On Mars” would have been a fantastic song for Freddie Mercury.

I’m sure GG Allin would’ve put a fine spin on “Scarborough Fair” or “Do You Know the Way to San Jose”.
