My new phone already has a crack in it that extends all the way across the phone. I’m not sure what happened; the glass screen protector is still intact. It’s insured, and for $100, I can get a replacement that will likely be refurbished, or I could live with the crack. It’s not visible all the time, and none of the pixels under the glass have been damaged. Anyone had luck with those fillers that are used to patch cracks or with replacement phones from Asurion? This phone is less than two weeks old, and I don’t want to receive someone’s old phone with scratches all over it or battery or software issues, but I’ll replace the it now if the crack is likely to get worse and cause trouble in the future.
The answer will depend greatly on the model of phone, its replacement cost, and the cost of replacing just the screen.
It’s this one. Replacing just the screen is out of the question. I don’t feel comfortable doing it or having a local shop do it.
Hey it’s only 20 bucks to replace!
(Oh $19.99 a month for 24 months).
An alternative is to swap out the MB (and maybe some other stuff) from a non-working phone with a good screen.
Replacing the screen itself is tricky. But a good phone repair shop can do it.
I’ve done it myself once. Got a little bit of glue squeezed out and under the edge of the screen. Really hated that at the time. Now I’m used to it and don’t really care.
Those aren’t the only two options. It’s a brand new $700 phone, so have the factory do it.
The factory doesn’t offer that option. They’ll replace it with a refurbished phone that comes with a 90 day warranty.
Hmm, did you buy it with a credit card that offers purchase protection for 30 days?
Maybe look on swappa? I mean, first, try to invoke whatever warranty/insurance claims you might have available.
ETA; I wouldn’t try to have it fixed at all, if it were me. I’d replace with the original or get something else.
Unfortunately, I don’t have any sort of purchase protection. I’ve decided to take my chances with the insurance company. At least they insure their replacements for a year, unlike the manufacturer, and there’s a possibility that I might be lucky enough to get a new phone if they don’t have any refurbished ones in stock.
I cracked the glass on my nearly new Samsung S7. Since that phone model is waterproof and that’s why I bought that model I wasn’t going to put up with a crack that destroyed the waterproofness even though it was nearly invisible and all the pixels were fine.
I had Asurion coverage. The FedEx overnighted me what appeared to be a brand new phone. If it was a refurb, it was old guts in a completely virgin new case.
I’ve used Assuron for a iP6. Though a refurb, it came looking and acting new. I believe they will replace what is needed to make it look new. It also performed as new but I only kept it a short time. It worked out to my advantage as there was a trade up option to get the iP7, and when I sent it back it still looked flawless from the Asurion replacement and got full credit. I’d say it is worth it to purposefully break it to get the replacement to trade it in.
Also you are paying for Assuron, you have already more then paid for the repair you may as well use it.
Looking again your phone is so new contact yoru credit card company or the manufacturer.
