Craftsman Tool Box Owner question! You got one? Get in here!

general question protion: does your box have a lock with key code 8049, and if so, are you willing to trade your lock for a nice new one with a different code? i’ll pick up all mailing cost.

heres why: i have 8 boxes, and 3 have this code. it would be nice to have all use the same key. now, sears sells kits with 3 or 4 locks keyed alike, but after many phone calls to retail, parts and service, the basic answer is, “yes, you can buy the kit, but no, you cant order a specific code.” this solution is no solution for me. i find it had to belive there are that many codes out there (all have same key blank and start with “8”), so i may be able to get lucky and find a kit in a retail store that has this code. problem is, i live in a remote area and only have one store within 100 miles, and they ain’t got it! even if they did, i’m one or two locks short…

local locksmith says he cant rekey craftsman lock, but i suspect he may not be the best locksmith…

so, my easy answer is to get ahold of other owners who may have a box with this lock code and we could trade locks. i may even have one they need to make a matching set, who know? all mine are new and nice.

any takers?

I’d find another locksmith. My locksmith thinks he could do the job and doesn’t see why it couldn’t be done. Finding a blank wouldn’t be a problem.

If nothing else, the locksmith should be able to give you new locks (not Craftsman) with a common key.

Mine all start with 81XX or 82XX, BTW.

yeah, i’m with you on the locksmith. he claims the wafers are too small or something. i would go with all new ones, but since i already have 3 that match, i was hoping to snag originals to complete the set. (my thinking: better to replace 5 than 8. also motivated by the cheap-bastard coefficient)

i may just look for a better locksmith, too.

anybody else wanna bite?
