In the numerous threads talking about Thanksgiving dinner, we’re seeing the usual side chatter about cranberry jelly vs. cranberry relish. Let’s decide this once and for all!
Yes, two options only: there’s no gray area here, folks, it’s one or the other!
Probably voting with what they grew up with. Even though I grew up with the jellied stuff from a can, my wife makes a scratch relish with cinnamon, orange and cognac that is to die for. I voted relish.
I wouldn’t call what we use a relish (though there is a lovely recipe I will try one of these times…) but it’s certainly not canned! Canned stuff is too sweet IMO.
But what about canned whole berry cranberry sauce? The last time this topic came around on the guitar I posted of my appreciation for thoughtful home made cranberry relishes, and my nostalgic love for the shimmering, quivering holiday jewel that is “jellied cranberry sauce”.
It’s a dead tie right now. I went for from the can with ridges because it’s what we’re having this year, but last year I made a fresh relish with oranges and walnuts. We alternate, depending largely on who’s going to be with us. This year it’s just the two of us and we both like the jelly, so… ridges it is!
As far as I can tell, I’m the only one that accused the relish folks of snobbishness. So at the moment it’s 1-0 on that front, because I don’t see any snobbishness in this thread anyway. It’s hard to reverse a 50:50 split though.
