I had to vote for the homemade stuff. I never did like the crap from a can. I thought I didn’t even like cranberries at all, until I decided to make the homemade stuff, and see for myself. Yep. The homemade stuff is wonderful! Much more flavor than the stuff in the can.
It’s basically something like this:
1 Bag of large cranberries
Orange juice
Cinnamon to taste
Nutmeg to taste
Splash of cognac (optional)
Finely chopped walnuts or pecans
Place all ingredients except nuts in a saucepan and follow directions on bag for cooking, but substitute orange juice for water. When cranberries are done, add chopped nuts. Serve warm or chilled.
I know that she’s also used a bit of triple sec instead of cognac. Sorry, no measurements for the spices.
Thanks!
I like my cranberries as Ocean Spray Craisins orange and cherry in homemade chex mix. i just finished microwaving 3 batches of chex mix and it’s cooling.
No, it’s not. It’s tradition.
In **my **house, if it doesn’t have can ridges, it’s not REAL cranberry “sauce.” But then, I’m one of those people who don’t like pulp in their orange juice. To me, the “stuff” in cranberry relish or chutney is just like pulp & it doesn’t belong.
I agree. I’ve tried to make cranberry sauce just like the stuff from the can, but I have yet to be successful. Maybe I’ll try it again. I think I didn’t concentrate it enough last time. I also need to come up with a proper mold.
Cranberry bits and things like that aren’t tasty in cranberry sauce.
Perhaps I’ll just replicate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches this year.
I need one of these. While intellectually I understand the Alton Brown Good Eats’ rule against unitaskers… I simply love hyper specialized kitchen gadgets too much.
Cranberry log is a tradition in our family. It’s not thanksgiving without the can shaped cranberry log on the fancy plate.
Either its a poor poll, or its simplified for arguments sake and I get to be pedantic and argue about it. I hate cranberry relish. I like homemade cranberry chutney.
Lots of sugar, maybe some added pectin or geletin, and for the mold - something with ridges. ![]()
Extra smiley for last post which is smiley lacking and reads harsher than it should ![]()
I’ll have yours, then.
When I was a kid we never did cranberry anything. Mom now has a recipe for the orange-cranberry relish and it’s delish. I don’t usually eat much, but I like to have some.
No sugar in this? My recipe is almost the same except for the cup of sugar and lack of booze, which I’m going to rectify this year, thanks!
1 C sugar
1 C orange juice
bag fresh cranberries
1/2 t cinnamon
pinch cloves
pinch nutmeg
pinch cardamom
Boil sugar, spices & liquid. Dump in cranberries. Cook until popped (about 10-15 minutes). Cool.
My mom makes a rather tart cranberry relish (we call it ‘cranberry sauce’) with orange juice and probably other ingredients I don’t recall that is just wonderful. I like the jelly as well, and I certainly appreciate it when I get it, but that specific cranberry sauce wins the day in my mind.
However, as I just said in another thread, they aren’t the same thing and it is somewhat nonsensical to compare them.
The Twicks does not produce poor polls.
Shame on you!

Cranberry can is only acceptable if there are not alternatives, cranberry sauce, even homemade, is only okay… but cranberry relish is delicious. My dad makes it, and he makes as much of that as we do of potatoes. That’s how much of it everyone eats. The only thing my family eats more of is turkey and stuffing.
Put your recipe where your mouth is!
Please. ![]()
Neither
Cranberry ice cream is the only way to go.
Neither. The canned jelly crap is abominable, while the relish has too many unnecessary ingredients like orange peel, cinnamon, etc. The only acceptable cranberry sauce has whole berries and is made of only three ingredients: cranberries, sugar, and water.
Cranberry jelly… you can slice it and spread it on anything.
And by anything I mean everything.
