Crank-Sensor Problem in 93 Grand Am V6 Automatic

Is this a high-dollar item and difficult to fix? It’s an intermittent problem, but aggravating just the same.

I tried a GOOGLE but didn’t find anything. Incidentally, if anyone knows of a good automotive question BB, I would love to know about it.

Thanks!

If it’s anything like my Subaru, it’s at most a two minute job to replace and the price varies widely (my mechanic found one for $30.00 while his parts store wanted $100.00 for it). Wouldn’t be surprised if you can get 'em cheap at the junkyard for a car of that vintage.

A crank sensor for your car should be around $30 or so.

Never replaced one on a Grand Am, but they aren’t usually a hard part to replace.

The big question is, are you sure that’s the problem?

My estimator book lists the crank sensor replacement at 1.4 flat rate hours, so I’m sure there’s some disassembly involved to get to it–no 2 minute job on this one. See if a Haynes manual shows the procedure, then you can decide if it’s something you’d feel comfortable tackling.

Well, the estimator books are maybe a bit pessimistic – I think it was supposed to be 0.8 hours for my car and the procedure was literally pull out the wire, undo one pretty accessible bolt, remove, insert new one, refasten bolt, reattach wire.
